hello fellow volkswagenjunkies, i got a 57 rag that has a 3 fold that needs some help. the owner before me had it all redone. it slides back and forth perfect, and latches nice. the canvas is brand new, but the big problem is that whoever he had install and sew it, never did sew it so when it slides back it makes that 3 fold look. it just all flaps in the wind. does it have to be sewn to the cross members? anybody got pictures of thiers open and closed and show how the canvas top is attached to the cross bars. any info or pictures will be a great help. thanks in advance. |

The canvas is screwed to the outer edges of the 2 inner sliding bows. That will stop it from flapping.
BTW, a 57 should have a 2 fold. Do you have pics? _________________

Hi,
Absolutely true about a 2 fold in 57. The last 3 fold year was 1955.
Is it possible that you have a 55 or earlier body on a 57 pan? Bodies often changed pans due to rust and accidents.
Have you checked the numbers stamped under the back seat with the numbers on the metal plate behind the spare tire? They should be the same number. If they are different you've got a "hybrid".
There is also a number stamped under the ID plate directly into the body. This number will NOT match any other number but will be a clue to the proper year of your body if you are missing the metal ID plate there.
Check it out, let us know.
The other possibility is that someone grafted an early rag top into your 57 body. Not the end of the world by any means but just not "proper". Actually if you wanted you could remove that graft, purchase the proper 2 fold graft and sell the 3 fold for enough money to totally pay for your 2 fold, installation of the 2 fold, a repaint and probably have cash left over to do something else to boot! The 2 folds are fairly rare and hard to come by and being so command ridiculously high prices that people are more than willing to pay!
Good Luck
let us know what you find

Welcome to The Samba and congrats on your new VW!
Here are some pics:
For a Three Fold (till 1955) you can see that the correct from the factory look is held down with two screws on each side.
However, some people prefer a more clean look like this:
Here's two folds for ya:

can anyone inform me as to how the top gets attached to the rails, or how the top actually gets into its two fold resting position.
new aquisition was sitting around for about 10-12 years, i believe. top, middle rail, fell apart on me today.
thank you greatly! _________________ NRA LIFE Member ("stand your ground", CCW, 2nd amendment right, Yes .45) |
