Researching my VIN and Engine serial numbers and several sites indicate that my 1972 Super Beetle was "California Only" as opposed to the rest of the US. What are the differences that would help identify if mine was sold for a strictly California market? I'm not even sure the engine and chassis were originally together so I'm hoping other details will help confirm the car's origin.
The thing that strikes me is that parts suppliers do not make a distinction. Mine has a classic look - not a typical "California Look" but I would imagine that state emissions and safety regulations were the reason for a distinct market distribution. |

I have a California '74 engine. It had dual heat risers, and came with a Solex PICT 34-4 carb. The carb was long gone, but I'm still running the dual heat riser setup on it. With a centermount carb, I figured the extra intake heat couldn't hurt.
There may have been other "California" mods. IDK what years, or what the mods were, but I'd expect they were all aimed at strict emissions.

1972 would have some minor tuning differences for california, perhaps limited to distributor changes. In 1972 the difference were minor. The factory manual lists some of the differences. in 74 california got a different carb but near as I can tell not in 72.
the engine should be an AH type for california, and the manual lists a different distributor for AH motors as near as I can tell.
Others will be able to tell you more detail.

My 72 Super is a Claif car. Original carb and completely orig engine and everything in the engine compartment... This includes the fuel and emission stuff for Evap...... Evap canister passenger rear inside the fender. It has 60,xxx on it now.
The carb has the idle up and all the control hoses for the air cleaner etc.
The distributor is orig.. DVDA.... Both advance and retard vacuum.
I am not sure but I believe that all the emissions were for all states in 72.

The first obvious difference in California delivered models that I'm aware of is 1974. California models still were delivered with the DVDA distributor for emissions. It came with the 043905205C. The "federal" or rest of the USA delivered VW bugs came with the 043905205 or 034 SVDA distributor. Through the rest of the 70's, the bugs were delivered with DVDA distributors in California. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
