how are 091 transmissions packaged these days for shipping? Anyone know or get one lately from one of the rebuilders? _________________

hey steve, when i got my trans rebuilt five or six years ago by german transaxle in bend, ken sent me a box with a pre-formed foam interior that the 091 slipped into almost perfectly. can’t remember if they supplied a trash bag in which to wrap it first, or if i did. i’d have to look up what the shipping charges were later this am, if you’re interested, but they weren’t outrageous. dt _________________ 1978 Champaign Edition 2 Westfalia

| Had my 356 tranny rebuilt by Vic Skirmants in MI. He does lots of them. He strapped it to a wood pallet and shipped to my mechanic in WI. I wasn’t there when it arrived so don’t know if it was plastic wrapped. |

I have 3 sitting here
all boxed, stapled shut and banding straps shipped via UPS or FED-EX
My house and my shop are about 50' apart and most of the time delivery drivers when they see my name/shop name on the package will come over to the shop for delivery
About 2 weeks ago I saw the UPS truck pull over to the house and was sitting there forever. I saw a box at the back of the truck poking out a few inches. When I walked over I saw a stick thin milk white man bun wearing dude looking all sorts of confused.
I asked him if he needed a signature and he said no, he needed help getting it off the truck. I said are you sure there is no signature required? he said "yea, you're all set I just need help getting it out, it's heavy"
I tossed the thing on my shoulder and walked it over to the shop. Told him a shot of whiskey, a bacon sandwich and a cigarette every once in a while may help him build some muscle mass.
Haven't seen that driver since
anyway, all packed up was 97 pounds as I recall _________________

this is how my 002 went off to Benco a couple weeks ago
we get pallet sized double layer cartons that work well to cut down for sturdy smaller cartons. The trans is bolted to the skid on the bottom

My how thing change / get picky. We would box em up in cardboard and ship them all across the USA via Greyhound bus! Never had a problem and it was cheaper than anything else. The customer would have to go to the Bus terminal nearest them to pick it up but it worked great.

Wow! Way too much work IMO. As to say, way too clean for going out to the rebuilder. Cleaning it is a big part of what you pay them for. Most certainly drain the oil. (as it saves shipping weight.) But the rebuilder has better equipment to get it clean.
Nice box though. |

This is how i shipped my Berg 5. For the cost of the transaxle, it was well worth building a custom crate.
It's VERY common to remove the nosecone and ship them in a large cooler.

BE CAREFUL with this method. I say this since we've seen mounting ears on different type assemblies get sheared off if the ear was bolted to a frame, and the box took a tumble, the stress can transfer all through the rigid connection of the bolted ear, shearing it off inside the box.
For me, it's safer to band strap the outer body of the item to the frame, versus bolting it down on. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

I shipped mine off in a double wall cardboard box that had once held an inverter welder.
It came back wrapped in shrink wrap, strapped loosely to a damaged half-pallet with a quarter of the bell housing in pieces, where somebody must have dropped it onto one end - like it rolled off a forklift or similar.
Lucky it was the bell housing so I got another one sent from the transmission people, this time wrapped very thoroughly in a Weddle cardboard box.
So now I have a starter motor adaptor, as what is left of the bell housing is just enough to bolt to the engine .. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

Well it started out as just giving it a quick wash...... and spiraled from there one sunny afternoon. _________________ 1973 super 2110cc

Took the trans to where it was going in SoCal. Nice trip, got to meet Eric too. He showed me how they pack them. The caveat is the same as always, just cause the last 100 made it without a problem that is not a guarantee someone won't run a fork lift thru it this time or drop it 10' to the ground. _________________

Eric is going to see if he can find the whine in it. Subtle but there. Rick Long told me Eric is the best in the business. I have some other things to finish like swapping the T4 case back due to that oil leak and decided to spend my time getting that done. It has to be ready to smog by late Feb or life turns into a hassle with DMV, BAR and smog.
We also had to pick up a cast iron sink in Santa Ana and some sherry from a friend's winery in the LA foothills so we just put it all in one trip. We also stopped by our scottie breeder so she could see her kids, the two scotties we have. Both are GChs but they are up there in age, and Tim has been on chemo for over a year for TCC with it still stable. Sue is selling her kennel and retiring after maybe 50 years of owning it, she took it over from her mom in her mid teens, so it was good to see her. She had a little scottie bitch that just finished her CH and she was absolutely so adorable. I almost made Sue an offer for her but the two we have are enough. When these two get chasing each other around the house it is like having ferrets living with you. It is so sad their lives are so short.
At my age now of 72 I don't see keeping the bus a lot longer, but when I do sell it, I want someone to have the best. _________________

I score old couch cushions and re-use the foam to completely encase the transmission. UPS will do everything in their power to destroy whatever you ship, they just "lost" a nice set of bay window seats for a customer. Really?? Lost?? They track everything in real time. A driver either stole them or destroyed them and ditched the remains.
Good luck, most of the strategies shown above are not enough protection. With the value of these parts, take them to a UPS store and let them do it that way if it dies they pay out ( well, maybe). If it fails due to your packaging you get a warm glass of fuck-off from corporate.
