i have a 73 fasty, and looking for front rotors, my parts store i am going thru have the calipers for it, and they are listed as type 1 thru type 3 calipers, but as for the rotors, they are listed as 4 lug bug rotors, are these the same as the type 3 rotors? _________________ 1968 VW variant |

As far as I know, the only thing interchangeable with a bug on the 73 will be the wheel bearings.
The rotors are larger, the calipers are type 4/914 ones.
They were the same as Ghia up untill 71 1/2.
I converted my 1972 Square to the earlier spindles so I could use the much cheaper and easier to find stuff. |

Actually the late type 3 rotors are "EARLY" type 4 rotors...that fit 411/914 to august of 1972 only....not after. Ray |

i got a pair of calipers, and it specified type 1 and type 3, they both looked like it, but the holes were WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off, the ones that came on there had a bolt spacing of 3" from center to center hole, and the ones i found were 2.25: center to center hole _________________ 1968 VW variant |

Yeah, the calipers you just bought are the early style (66 to 71), then the next are 72 & 73 (NLA). The bolt spacing is farther apart, along with a spindle change and a larger rotor. This is why when people ask about upgrading the "early" style disc brakes, it's first recommended to go to the "later" style. However, as you have found out, nobody carries the "late" calipers (other than a Porsche shop), and the rotors are hard to find as well. A friend of mine swapped to the early spindles just so he could get parts for his 72 Squareback. I know this is probably a step backward, but at least he can get parts. You could send your late calipers to Jim Adney for rebuilding IF you want. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Where do you get that nobody carries the late T-3/early type 4 caliper?
I can find them all over the place. Rockauto have three diffenet brands of them ranging from $41 to $55.
These calipers fit a WIDE range of cars from volvo's to Saabs. Ray |

Post up some part numbers, or the year and model they cross over with, so we can make a list for those who are looking for them.
Do you have a source for the late t-3/early t-4 rotor too? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
