|
|
| Im new to Vanagon ownership (88 Westy) and preparing for first long trip. Looking for advice from some weathered Vanagon owners. Whats in your 86-91 Vanagon roadside repair/maintance kit for parts and tools? What do you suggest? What do you carry? What has been worth its weight in gold on the road for you? |

I carry spare belts, coolant, temp sensor (I-4), fuel filter, spare plugs, oil filter, and cap and rotor. A Bentley manual is worth more than its weight in gold. Even at today's inflated rate. _________________ '85 Cabriolet (Margo)

In addition to what zimzam listed, I also carry a voltmeter/test light, libby's coolant filler tube, assortment of hose clamps, jumper wire with a selection of crimp on ends, and a blanket to not worry about to lay on while underneath.
I always keep a pair of swimmin shorts in the vanagon too... always seems like I forget to bring them when they are needed at my destination. _________________ '69 Tintop T2 - '86 Syncro - '87 Westy - '02 337 GTI - '99 4Runner - '13 4Runner |

If you can find a Haynes or Chilton manual take those as well as the Bentley. Sometimes Bentley leaves out details that are in the other two. A manual for the type of fuel injection you have would be nice. I've got 3 gallon sized freezer bags, 1 is fuel repair, 1 is electrical, 1 is coolant hose repair. Everything listed by all the other posters above.
On trips of a certain length(whatever intuition tell her) even as short as an hour, my girlfriend brings a tote bag with the following:book, fleece jacket, bottle of water, candy and a flask of Makers. For "WHEN" we break down. _________________ 1987 GL Sunroof

This is a very helpful thread. I was just searching and reading through older posts to get an idea of what Vanagon specific stuff I should carry in mine. All of these things are great.
When I was a kid, my mom drove an old Opel Cadet and my aunt drove a Chevelle (called it Rusty - guess why! LOL) and they each carried a set of basic tools, a huge crescent wrench, a couple of heavy duty flashlights, spare bulbs and batteries for flashlight, flares, matches, rags, and probably some items I'm missing.
Once I got my first car, in addition to the above stuff, I've always carried an extra change of clothes, blankets (for people!), jumper cables, baby wipes (for washing hands), granola bars and other non-perishable foods and at least a gallon of drinking water. I keep it all in a big blue Rubbermaid tote. _________________ ~Annie

This is why the Vanagon requires C-rated tires, not becasuse of the Vans weigh but all the tools you need to carry _________________ 1987 Doka 1.9TD from Germany gasser DU tranny, fuel turned up, 1.6 LDA pin, boost at 15 psi,egt and boost gauges, stock diesel tach, air filter behind passenger tail light, IC to come

Don't forget your spare undies!
I always take a spare headlight bulb (in the glove box). Just in case... Scary mountain roads are much nastier when you can't see the edge!
You can fit a LOT of tools under the front seats, and most people will never know they are there

when im considering what to bring i try and think of those parts that could fail relatively without warning and strand me. from owning my bus and reading through here id say to be pretty comprehensive-
fuel pump,
coil,
hall sensor(oh yes),
expansion tank cap,
afm(if i had a spare air flow meter, though i don't know if this can strand you)
alternator,
water,
jumper wires to bypass faulty relays and spare relays if possible,
might carry oil and in the off chance that if a serious leak did happen from physical damage (rocks etc) i could keep topping off and driving.
maybe a spare fuel injector? |

| It's good to keep a spare double relay as this can strand you, fuel pump was a good suggestion for the same reason. |
