First thanks for all the great information and opinions available in the forums. My question is if I can replace the stock crank pulley on my dp 1600 with a degreed after-market type without pulling the motor?

Yes, as long as the old pulley doesn't put up such a fight that you need a huge industrial strength puller to get it off. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Ok thank you for answer. I'm not entirely sure if stock pulley is showing me "true" top dead center. While watching the #1 intake valve return after opening back to complete closed position it take nearly 180 degree movement on crank pulley to reach the dimple mark lining up with case split. Bug is newly purchased and the guy I bought it from claims he had a shop rebuild it less than 1000 miles ago. I thought before I drove it much I would double check valve lash to reassure myself.

There's 2 ways to confirm firing TDC, either remove the other valve cover and watch #3's rockers, when #1 is at TDC #3's will both move as you rock the engine back and forth a few degrees. Or remove #1 spark plug and feel for compression as you approach suspected TDC.
Or if it's an already running engine whatever terminal in the distributor cap the rotor is pointing at means the cylinder it's wire leads to is near TDC. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

How many notches/dents/marks are on your stock pulley? VW made a few different marking configurations on their pulleys over the years, depending on which distributor/carb combination was installed.
Show us what you have and someone can help you out. _________________ Brian
