I had the front end tore apart for repairs to the front beam and tie rods and stuff. When I put it all back together and go to attach the steering shaft to the coupler, there is a gap. Is the steering shaft adjustable? What am I missing?
Here is a picture of the gap.

What happens if you loosen up the steering box bolts and rotate it towards the steering shaft? _________________ Brian

What sorta heinous fuckery is going on that made someone weld an extension onto the steering box?!? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I literally never noticed that until now. I have no idea. It's a stock beam as far as I can tell. The steering was fine before I decided to redo the front end. I had a sorta bent steering dampener but other than that it was fine. |

I haven't tried that. I thought the steering box is "locked" into position by some kind of bracket or something. Am I wrong? |

Go inside the cabin & see if there is an abnormally large gap between the steering wheel & lock housing, it may just need to be centered & pushed back down _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
