I just picked up an NOS oil strainer, part number 311 115 175, but it looks different than the one that's currently in my car. I wonder if the one in my car is actually a Type 1 strainer? How are Type 3 and Type 1 strainers different?

They have different part numbers so something is different.

There are 3 different size oil pick-up, so there are 3 different strainers.
Many cars actually have the wrong strainer.
And, then there is the late style with the internal spring, which is not right for an early engine.

Ah, looks like I have the wrong one then. The one I bought has the internal spring, which I guess is correct for later Type 3s.

Russ-

What's the risk of using the later style oil strainer, WITH THE SPRING, on an early type 3 1500S motor?

Seems as though most of the replacement strainers you can purchase these days all have the spring.

So here's the somewhat confusing part. I think what I actually have is part number 311 115 175 A, not 311 115 175. There's a letter A on the part number sticker that I didn't see at first because it's a different color than the rest of the part number. My early (1961) parts book says 311 115 175 is the correct part for my car. But I also have a later copy of the parts book that says 311 115 175 A is correct for all Type 3s through July 1969. Could 311 115 175 A be a later development of the strainer that can work for all 1500s regardless of the diameter of the oil pickup tube? Here's the center of the part I bought, which seems like it's designed to conform to tubes of various sizes.

What do you think?

Well, my Type 3 parts book shows 2 different strainers. It is supposed to be Rev. Supplement 10.
Note that the second one is a Type 1 number.

Quote:

311115175 A Oil strainer
to Eng No. K 0 150 000 / T 0 690 000

111 115 175 B Oil strainer
from Eng. No K 0 150 001 / T 0 690 001

Right, the Type 1 number part was used on cars built after July '69 according to my book. So 311 115 175 A must be a redesigned strainer that works for all earlier Type 3s.
