Hi,
after a few month of reading and buying parts on thesamba.com now I would like to introduce my ride. It is a 1966 pearl white fastback which wasn't in too bad shape, taking into consideration the abuse of many years during winter with salt on the streets etc. I bought the car in dismantled stage with some work already done, like powdercoated pan, but the body was left as it was.
I am currently bringing it back into shape for its 45th birthday next year. Plans are to visit the big Volkswagen meeting in Hannover Germany on the 1st of May 2011...
Let's see if it works
Take a look at my blog if you are interested in more details - don't worry - it's bilingual

Thanks Mike,
there was already a feature of my car in a German Classic Car Magazine called "Oldtimer Praxis". This inspired me a lot - I don't wanna be laughed at if "the crowd" - or should I say "Krauts" " don't get what they expect after a good start on a featured car. Although I don't wanna go the 100% OG road, I have to have a "Classic car registration" first, before I can later implement a bigger motor and IRS in the rear. Subtle mods are allowed, but if you go too wild - even only on paint - you fail in getting the "H" registration - H-for Historic car...
Plans call for a pearl white respray, the 5,5 x 15" Ronal wheels and a slight lowering job - which should be compatible with the "H"-reg...
But it is a long road from here to the registration ... |

Thanks for the comments!
Regarding parts availability -
Incidentally I bought some parts in the US - especially the chrome bits and pieces are pretty rotten on most of the German cars. Usually the rocker panels are basically gone and parts are only available at some specialists.
It is hard to find good fenders and doors, there are NOS parts out there, but they come with a price tag...
The times when you could order parts at your local VW dealer are long gone...
Motor parts are far cheaper in the US, too! For my 2,0 liter engine I ordered the most stuff so far from Vee Dub Parts Unlimited. Weber carbs and other things are also much more expensive here. I tend to say it would be easier to restore an old VW in the US then in the "Fatherland", today... |

Did my homework!
Hi guys, I got a few steps forward. The body is in the body&paint shop and I just start reassembling the pan, with all the nice shiny new hardware and powder coated parts. What a satisfactory work after all the dirty work of grinding, welding etc.
See my blog for further details I guess I am too dumb to post a pic here?

Where are you in Germany? I move to the Ramstein area in a couple weeks. I'm looking forward to going to some of the VW shows, meetings, and events as well! |

@ Woreign,
I live in a city near Düsseldorf, which is about 180 miles from Ramstein. But here in Germany there is such a big number of meetings and events, a few cool clubs in the Franfurt area, it will be easy to find some VW nuts over here! Hope to meet you somewhere over Germany in the next months!
@Fastbackdon:
yeah, the "TL" as the Fastback was called here in Germany has always been the "ugly duckling" of the VW fleet, but people start to recognise that also the Fastback is a real nice ride, especially with a cool set of rims and the right stance! I know of a few Fastback projects which are currently "in the making"...
here are 2 new shots:

a nice sight! |
