Buy the Lares and be done with it. It fits and works just fine.

This is what I’m saying. So much chatter about a part that’s readily available.

yeah Rich but why pay for a part when you can make it for free from left overs in your closet. I mean that is what y'all tell me all the time. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

So I went to the Lares website. The coupler looks very robust.

"- New Rag Joint steering couplers are carefully engineered to OE specifications.
- All units are complete with lower casting, rubber disk and mounting bolts already assembled for easy, trouble free installation.
- All units are carefully packaged to insure safe arrival at your door
- Backed with a Limited Lifetime Warranty (commercial use- one year)."

Rockauto sells them for $21. I'm at the point with my SC that I need a good coupler so I'll try one.

That Lares coupler looks like the best solution right now.

"OEM, Made in Germany" sold by CIP1.

Every auto part I've ever gotten that had "OEM" written on it has been crap.
I've gotten a few OK parts from CIP1, but mostly not.

The one they are selling might actually be an original VW part.

https://www2.cip1.com/vwc-211-415-417-gr/

Richard had a bunch of the ones made by the original company and all some did was bitch about them. My best guess is that some which appear flexible harden fast enough to not be flexible by the time they are a month in use.

I bought one of these from Cip1 last fall but for only $27.99. They showed the same OEM VW part on their site. What I received was an OEM brand one that flexed just like the shitty one from Wolfsburg west. False advertising so I sent it back. The WW and Cip1 couplers are only marginally less flexible than your average flip flop.

I put a WTB ad in the classifieds and while it wasn’t cheap, I had an actual OEM VW part in hand within 3 days and installed in 5.

how "not cheap" was it?

Not the OP, but I also did a WTB and got an OEM coupler for $75 shipped last year. Not cheap but better than dicking around with crap parts and hoping for the best.

I hear ya clucking big chicken. But, they are 50 year old cars and shit happens.

I just buy parts from Autozone, O’Reillys and Napa now. If they suck, they go back. But in all seriousness, AutoZone does have good starters and alternators.

Bam!

It’s way cheaper from Rockauto, but I can have it the next day from Oreillys with zero shipping cost.

Just noticed that Bus Depot is selling this:

https://www.busdepot.com/211415417

Doesn't say the brand, but it looks like you can see reinforcing fibers embedded in the rubber. The price isn't bad either at $13.27. Maybe call before buying to verify that it is reinforced.

If the coupler is reinforced with steel wire the horn will continually sound on a pre 74 Bus because the steel wires act as a ground.

I’ve been screwing around with a 74 Bus and finally figured out that the soft coupler allows the steering column to raise up when turning and pulling on the steering wheel which causes the bolts on the coupler to yank the ground wire off the tab on the insulated collar and stop the horn from working.

I’m going to try the Lares 209
