|
|
Well, after owning my 72' for a little over a year and not driving it I guess it's time to start fixin it up. I had alot of interest in the "Golden Rake" project and liked the look of that car so I think I'll do something similar! Don't be fooled by the pics, this car needs ALOT of work. The pans are shot, the drivers side heater channel is rusted thru, wiring junk, needs brakes, etc....So up on the jacks she goes.
The official "before" photos.

I hope to have her finished before summers end! It's gonna be alot of work but I'm up for it. As soon as the body comes off it's going to the body shop. I'll work on the frame/pans while it's there. |

Ok, fenders off, carpet mostly out running boards off. The only bad rust on the heat channels is the DS front. The rest is just surface rust as far as i can tell. The pans are SHOT! The metal in front of the dash under the hood has been cut up by the PO. I will weld in patch panels there. More progress hopefully tomorrow. On a side note I picked up a sweet 59' today! Not sure what I'm gonna do to it yet. Pics below
Previous owner really goofed this up. Not sure why he did this?
Holes cut-out of dash area?
New to me 59'

Update: Body is almost ready to remove from pan. I hope to have it off before the weekend as I'm headed to Bugapalooza Friday. The dash cover is off and revealed the gaping hole with absolutely NO support. I'm not sure what to do with this? Any idea's would be great.

- not much support for the windshield is there? I would get a donor dash and weld it in. _________________ Joey

The PO probably cut that for more tie rod/body clearance.
You can go ahead and patch it up and flip the tie rod ends instead. _________________ ✠Miklo✠

Ya, that's kinda what I'm thinking or maybe weld in some vertical bracing and reinstall the fiberglass dash. _________________ 72' Standard Beetle

Just got back from Bug-a-palooza in TN and picked up a donor dash cheap. Body ready to come off but couldn't get the help before the show. Will have it off this week.

Wow someone needs to take the saw from that PO and not give it back. Mine had similar holes in below the dash like yours but not as big. I believe they were speaker holes in mine but with them open trunk fumes came right in the cab. |

Kflyer, since you asked for opinions I'd like to present mine. Even for a weekend/hobby car I find the stock dash layout practical (switch+radio location plus glovebox). Yes, go ahead and weld in your dash purchase to regain stiffness in the body.
Since your car does not have the air box, you could consider using the space below the radio opening for extra gauges. Maybe even moving the radio upwards slightly to make room for gauges. Or, smooth out the area left and right of the stock speedo with a filler panel to place your smaller gauges evenly- either 2 vertically next to the speedo, or two across on the left and on the right sides. Another possibility is to fit a Porsche 914 tachometer next to the speedo, which is the same size as a stock Beetle speedo and has a very similar style to the 100mph later Beetle speedos. See my gallery for a photo on my '77's layout. You do need to cut out and reposition the stock speedo surround section, then find another one for the tach. Having the two big gauges in direct sight thru the steering wheel, with two smaller gauges in between is helpful. |

Rome, I agree. The factory dash needs to be re-installed for structual reasons if nothing else. _________________ 72' Standard Beetle

The lights will probably remain factory style, not really sure yet. _________________ 72' Standard Beetle

Update: Started stripping the pan down for new floors. I hope to be ready to weld by next weekend.
New narrowed and adjustable beam.
Can anyone tell me what size the CV attachment screws are? They look like 12pt torx?
