Hello All,

So I bought a refurbished 12V gas gauge. Once installed it wont stop pegging out. Any ideas why its doing this? and how do I get it read accurately?

Take a resistance reading between your sender and ground

Assuming you have a 0-90 ohm VDO sender and not a Beetle or aftermarket VDO sender, your signal wire or sender is shorting out on the body/frame, or the float is jammed in the sender.

Bad ground would cause the gauge to read empty.
TSTRACY39 is correct, shorted signal wire to ground or stuck full float.

Don't forget that the guage casing itself needs to be well grounded - as when it is properly installed in the dash with the metal bracket. At first I was testing the guage in my hand (with all the wires attached on the back) and it still wasn't working. Scratched my head a few moments, then AHHA - ground the guage, dude!

Thanks everyone for the input. The other day I was driving and the gauge started Jumping. Now its working but not consistently. Is it common for the gauge to be jumping around while you drive?

No, the gauge needle doesn't jump around, either while sitting still or while driving.

Sometimes I see it moving a tiny bit while driving but not bouncing around.

I have seen the needle "slam" from empty to full inadvertantly when the sender was connected or disconnected. It would only do it when the tank was full though. I replaced my rotton 10 gallon tank with a 15 gallon bay tank and only used the original sender to plug the top opening until I received a proper longer bay sender...
