Anybody know about these tires?

In my quest for inexpensive tires, I came across the Nexen CP521. In a 215/65R16 102T it costs $73 in California via tirecrawler.com as of August 2011.

Looks OK, but I assume it's a passenger car tire. Even so, (de-rated 9%) they look adequate at about 1680 lb. capacity.

Didn't see a spec for max pressure on the website. I'd feel better if we knew it's rated for over 50 psi...

Also: how tall? Find out & do the math so you'll know ahead of time about any negative effect on the "power-to-the-pavement" quotient.

Nice price, though!

It is an XL tire so it is not derated. They classify the tire as an SUV tire rated to 50 psi. See:

In that case, looks really good! Go for it...
(Note to self: now must find some $73 16" rims...)

Probably have a better ride than what I'm running... Wink

XLs are still passenger tires, so don't expect nice stiff sidewalls.

So do you consider an SUV tire in the same class as a Passenger tire, then?

I do not know what to expect, but with a 102 load rating you hope the sidewalls do not give out (crack?) from the loading.

I think they are still rated as a passenger tire, although a pretty beefy one. No "P" but no "LT" either. Arrow

Let us know what you think of them.

I googled and did not come up with a great definition but did find something at tirerack:

I'm rolling on some Nexen 14" tires that I bought under duress when I was driving back from purchasing my van in another state.

I hadn't planned on buying tires and they were not the brand I would have chosen, furthermore, I paid way too much.

That said, I have to admit that the Nexens are firm, wear like iron, and have been trouble free.

If I ever wear out my current set I'd try some CP521s on the CLK rims sitting in my garage.

So anybody got any more ideas about these tires?

I have new 14 inch Hankooks on right now with factory alloys and am happy enough. But, I have stock brakes still and, well, I would feel better putting bigger brakes on with my new found need for speed with my Subaru.

The roadian - at has a 225-65-16 with a load ratig 106!! I have no idea how they would wear but the load rating looks right.

My 17s only have a 99 load rating and are ok for a tin top.

Good find!!

Ok I went to the Nexen web site.
http://www.nexentireusa.com/tireoverview19-2/SUVLightTruck

There are 8 different Roadian tires. I could not find that size in any Roadian tire. Embarassed Sad Got linky??

P.S. That tire size is not even listed in that size in the size pull down menu.

Thanks for sharing this tire option. I recently bought 5 for $73 each plus tax, free shipping to a tire store not too far out of my way.
I installed them on an 87 2wd using Mercedes type steel 16" x 7" ET37. Everything clears fine. I was able to mount the spare under the van using the VanCafe oversize spare carrier plus a little bending down of the hinges.

The tires are Load 102, max 50 psi, 1874 lbs, Extra Load. I liked them right away and even more so during the recent rains. Previously I had Load D 195R14 "slicks" that were ok when fairly new but not for very long. Too slick in the wet, even with decent tread depth left.

No, I don't know where to get more of the rims I used. I wish.
It looks like this tire model may be dropped from the Nexen line soon if not already.

I like the tread pattern - a good combination of drainage and tread shapes. Looks like it would be stable on the road - something the Vans need IMHO.

Closest drop I could figure out was in Mission Viejo. That is not "that" close to San Diego. It would be an hour drive each way for me to go to their drop point. All they seem to have listed is Alan Tire stores.

Where did you go?

crazyvwvanman wrote:

What is the Merecedes part number on them?

crazyvwvanman wrote:

Why?

They ARE hard to locate on the website. Under truck tires, I think, if I recall.

The CP621 seems quicker to find, but is underrated for the vans, I think.

So what do you base the availability issue on?

My rims are aftermarket Mercedes type, so no Mercedes part numbers on them.

I could not find listed them on the Nexen USA website. Various Nexen dealers I looked at did not show them either.

What is even more interesting is that they have lots of tires with high load rating including a few 205/70-14 tires that may be worth looking into for those wishing to stick with the original 14 inchers....not that they will find this reference easily. Plus they have other tires in 215/65-16 but the CP521 is the only one I noticed with XL rating too. They may have more.....We'll see how this experiment plays out first....

Yes, their international site has the CP521 as well as some other interesting tires but with these tires missing from the USA site it is hard to assume much lasting availability here. I hope I am wrong about that. About 6 months ago I put some Nexen XL tires on my wife's BMW wagon and am happy with those so trying Nexens on a van was an easy step.
