I am buying a VW Thing soon for dirt cheap. EDIT: He DOES have the title, this is no longer an issue.

It needs a hood and fenders. How hard is it to find these? I don't know if Sunray has anything anymore, but they're shutting themselves in until they can get their ducks in a row, understandably.

Registration and titling requirement varies state to state so you need to do some research for YOUR state. Look for references such as abandoned vehicle, lost title, and the such. At the very least get a bill of sale stating that seller knows of no liens or other interests on the car.

Hood shouldn't be an issue other than shipping. Should be able to find something close. Post an ad in the Samba classifieds.

OEM fenders can be expensive. You may want to look into fiberglass aftermarket. Especially if you are going to run big tires.

Michigan isn't terrible for re-title, take the Vin into your SoS and they will give you the paperwork to redo, you'll need a purchase agreement from the seller, and if possible a previous registration.

I have some hoods available, I am just south of grand rapids, I have a ton of parts from parting out 3 things to fix mine so I can hook you up there. PM me here for an email address

Oh sorry, I'm temporarily living in Florida. I guess I should have mentioned this. The keyword is temporary, which is why I haven't changed my location.

If you are interested in shipping a hood, you can either send it to me or my family in Michigan if you feel up to it. If not, I'll check Sunray when they get their shit straight. (Corky's getting shafted pretty hard by the county.)

You would be best to take the seller with you to DMV as part of the deal or ask them to obtain the replacment title.

I'll have to talk to the previous previous owner. The guy bought it yesterday to part it out and scrap it.

I'm in the Tampa Bay Area (NPR). Uncanny.

But I talked to the guy who's selling it to me, and as it turns out, he DOES have the title, so no big deal there.

But I will need some parts. If you could hook me up with that guy, that would be awesome.

Will do. It'll be about a week until I get it though.

Even doing the work your self it is hard to restore reasonably. Next time I would pay as much as I could bear for the best Thing I could find.
My buddy had the same experience restoring a 356.

It is solid enough to daily drive at the moment. I'll be using this to ferry myself around while I restore my super.
