It would be an economical way to improve on the flimsy Vanagon mirrors with out spending a left nut to get the OEM power ones
an the have some with LED markers
I'm thinking on ordering some but would like to know if any body has done it before. _________________ Tight is tight... too tight is expensive!!!!

I don't know if they would work, but they do look pretty damn good.
Not sure if you'd be able to mount them so that they cover the OEM mirrors mounting holes....looks like the Wranglers are made to be mounted to a flat, vertical surface. _________________ 1987 GL Sunroof

I think those are the ones that are on that custom doka from Omaha:

Those are from a newer jeep and would for sure require drilling in to the door and bolting from the inside. The sure look sweet and still cheaper than the VW big mirrors
I'm working on a simple adapter block that will alloud the use of the original mounting holes and would the mirrors from an 06 and older (see previous link for pics) _________________ Tight is tight... too tight is expensive!!!!

While your jig is set up, I'll take a pair of those blocks...!!! Looks like a nice mirror option. _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

its been a while, and no jig yet, because the mirrors where not built as I thought.
So I drilled 3 holes (on a parts van's door) to see what it would look like.
Not two bad I think.
a little mod. was required to level it but I think I can come up with a mounting plate to make it straight and use the existing mounting holes thus no drilling
I do like a lot the ones from the home made doka. _________________ Tight is tight... too tight is expensive!!!!

I don't want to use the ones from a jeep any more, to ghetto.
Has any body used the ones from a Toyota FJ cruiser?

http://www.offroadengineering.com/product-heated-mirror-kit.html
I just found this kit and this is the route I might go, drilling or not. To have power and heated, I think it would be worth the cost. I will be painting my rig at some point and may just fill in the existing mirror mounts or use them for a small off road LED mount. The Jeep mirror mounts seem to protrude into the door quite a bit. Does anyone know if this is an interference with the window or anything else? I guess if the Jeep mirror mounts are threaded deep in, then you could cut some of that off to avoid clearance issues. I am tired of my damn flopping mirrors, and I have been finding myself wiping them a lot so the heated would be a nice touch. Thought I would share. _________________ 84 Westy Wolfsburg Manual - RG6 Bostig |

My favorite is actually the OEM power ones just for the size, fit and not so much of a mod. You don't have to fill in the area where the stock mirrors went. Too bad they are horrid expensive! Geez! Your post is wonderful Dave! That door brace being in the right spot is pretty awesome. Good write up on this! _________________ 84 Westy Wolfsburg Manual - RG6 Bostig |

Funny, guess great minds think alike. I bought some of these mirrors a year ago but didn't want to cut holes in van. Started making mounts in CAD and finished the rough design a week ago. Printed prototypes and angle to door and hole mounts are all great. I plan to modify the appearance to make them prettier and will move on to first prototype in billet on cnc in a week.

Wow, wasn't expecting a lot of interest to be honest . One drawback to my approach (not modifying door) is complexity. These will involve a lot of setups on cnc unless I got a quote for a run on a 4 axis, which will not be affordable. I'm currently designing some fixtures to mix cnc and manual machining to make them doable. Hoping to do them on my mini cnc to justify it's purchase to my wife . After machining plan to powder coat in black.
Last issue I'm concerned about is how tight VW's tolerances were for door holes. So if some people are interested in being guinea pigs let me know. Appears some folks may be interested in heated mirrors, my design currently doesn't account for them (live in texas). If that is important let me know, I'd need to add another hole to the design. |

I was picturing a milled slot that goes from the stock vanagon wire pass through hole to some where down into your mount. I think that would be just 2 set ups in a manual mill. One on the plane that the standard vano mirror mount and the other in the plane of the side of the door. You would add a hole in this set up to get the wires into the hole for the mirror to sit in. I don't know enough about the jeep mirrors on how their wires get into the mirror from the mount. This will grow some legs. I will do some trials for you. You can leave them bare for that, then we can powder coat when you are done with the iterations. I just eyed some new FJ Cruiser mirrors today. They are a similar mount and a good size and shape to fit the vanagons. Cool stuff! _________________ 84 Westy Wolfsburg Manual - RG6 Bostig |

Hmm, now I'm torn. I was thinking about doing Dave's door mount style, but that mount you are designing sure is clean. I do still like that Dave's mount lowers the mirror a little more. I'll be looking forward to your final result.

My daydream for some time now was a combination of the two ideas. A mount that mounts to the upper stock vano holes and continues down the side of the door to put it where Dave has his Jeep ones mounted. More material involved bus should offer a slightly more stable mount. Then you need a rubber pad to fit the larger mount, but hey, this will be an iteration type process. Looks like it is taking off in the right direction! _________________ 84 Westy Wolfsburg Manual - RG6 Bostig |

| Land rover defender mirrors are good. You have to make a bracket up for them to fit the original mount holes |
