Recently bought an 87' weekender and starting to fix it up, beginning with the fuel system.
I ordered up fuel lines, sender, and tank seal kit. I need to replace the broken EVAP tanks, left definitely, right probably. The only ones I can find are the $400+ tig welded aluminum ones on vancafe. Are there any other options out there? I don't live near a wrecking yard that has old vanagons so online is my main option. Can anyone point me to one of these? I tried searching the forums, Google, and reading way too many posts. |

OP, where do you live?
If you live really close to me, I have a pair I could part with but I'm too busy to deal with all the stuff that the guys in the Classifieds are willing to do. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

Thanks for the replies. I live in WA so not close to you I'm MT
I will follow up with some of the postings on the classified section as suggested, but what are your thoughts on the expensive kit vs the value of a used part with 30+ years of oxidation and fuel wear?
I don't want to get in the habit of buying expensive unnecessary parts, but is this part of the fuel system worth a $400 update over a $100 used? |

VanWagon - sent you a PM; we are in WA and just replaced our expansion tanks - old ones appear to be in good shape and are available. |

Ken at Vanagain has new plastic evaporation tanks available. I had to replace one of mine last year as it had cracked and lost the hose nipples. _________________ 1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia "Von Westy"

Thanks you all l. I've got it covered for now. I appreciate the responses. I'm still learning how to source parts for this new vehicle and appreciate how helpful everyone is here |

Indeed they are -- especially when you compare them to Van Cafe's aluminum versions: https://vancafe.com/left-and-right-fuel-expansion-tank-kit/ . $$$$$$$$$
If mine needed replacing (after 30+ years) I'd go with the new plastic ones. _________________ "Fritz", a temperamental and unforgiving 1989 Westy that proudly bears his German flags and status as a member of the exclusive GoWesty Belly Flop Club.

Please don't tell my wife. She footed the bill for the blingy VC version for our van. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

just looped/capped the lines/nipples at the tank.
I do still have the tank crossover from saddle to saddle. and the tank vent from top to the top of filler.. those are to facilitate filling.
then I have a small ~1/16" hole up at the top of the filler under the cap for 'breathing' as I don't have a charcoal canister either. it's essentially like having a vintage beetle tank.
very very rarely do I get a whiff of fuel near the cap from the vent hole.
guess for all my other 'green' methods I'm not that concerned over the minute evaporation of the gas in my tank out a 1/16th hole..
and I don't live in California anyways.
I also don't fill the gas till it's right at the very top of the filler neck..
a practice my other van friend does which is both odd & maddening to me (to observe). _________________

I pulled my evap tanks out and they are still good but i can't get them to fit back in. Is there any trick to get them back in the recess of the body and over the stud? |
