Starting a thread to keep track of my 63 [Deluxe, I stand corrected below]. I don't plan on finishing in a year, or even longer. Just looking to document the progress, from stock to wherever it goes. Will try to post pics regularly...
Next few posts will capture some of the stuff I've done to this point...

You are probably right. What would you say makes it a deluxe? |

Its easier to list the non features of the standard although I'll miss a few:
Half a headlining, No chrome trim on the dash, painted hubcaps, black gear knobs and dash knobs, different steering wheel, no fuel guage, usually 1200cc engine
Theres heaps more if you search the forums, but yours is one of those tacky deluxe models
Nice one too! _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

This car is solid given its age. Nice find! More updates too!
It looks a Deluxe sedan to me. _________________ (o\!/o) Fweem! Fweem!

Check out what I picked up a few weeks ago. Stock front beams and Transaxkle, drum to drum; even baja rims and tires! All free care of my dad's neighbor who is a gearhead but moving away. His wife said he had to get rid of this stuff...one man's wife's trash...another man's treasure.
I'm hoping to harvest core parts from the beam (spindles and torsion rods) and transaxle (springplates) to lower my car. I'll probably keep the "allegedly rebuilt" 64 tranny in case mine goes out
Everything is a bit worse for the wear, it looks like everything sat outside for a while before I got it, but I think it'll all clean up alright.
Any ideas on how to break old rusty bolts loose?

After months of questions and advice provided by a very patient and kind man named Matt Watts of Punch Drunk Customs, I finally took a plunge on a beam.
Matt worked with me for literally months (I think we had like 23 emails back and forth) to figure out what was best for my setup. This is a 4" narrowed adjustable beam with dropped spindles and shock towers. To that we decided to add Empi Disc Brakes. I am beyond excited
The quality of work on this beam is AMAZING! Matt is seriously talented at what he does, and he takes pride in making sure that his work speaks for itself. I was prepare to wait a while for the beam, but Matt did really well on time. I am very pleased and have hopefully found a new friend and resource. He is a wealth of knowlege and willing to share.
P.s. When visiting with Matt, I also learned that he also does DROP PLATES for the rear. He was able to advise me on those as well and hooked me up for a little bit more. I'm very happy, thanks MATT!
Stay tuned for installation and BEFORE and AFTER pics!

Just for kicks, here are some photos of my old 58, my first car, and the accident that almost took it's life, only to be restored once again...

Here are a few pics before I start the front and rear suspension swap!
Garage is clean and ready for the job!
Here are some wheels I bought about 5 years ago for $75. They'll be the temporary setup until I figure out exactly what wheels I really want...Planning on painting them and installing them temporarily, while I figure our what rims I really want. Any suggestions on wheels?
4" narrowed with wide 5 discs...
Here are the before pics...

Finally got the front beam in last night. Had some touch and go moments, but it all turned out alright. Here are some pics:

Out came the old beam

So far it's been a good experience. I am trying to decide what rims to go with and need to settle on tire size, I was just so excited and wanted to just stuff some tires on it and drop it. It'll adjust lower and probably drop a little more with lower profile tires
A big thanks to my cousin John. He's motivated and helped me out a lot off and on over the years. Below is our pic from last night (he's on the left, me on the right) and another one from 22 years ago when he helped me put in my first beam when I was 16. Here's to the next 22 years of tinkering with these things in the garage!

I got started on the rear tonight, expecting to do some disassembly but got motivated and was able to complete the drop plate installation.
Setting up for disassembly
The old...
Brakes were a little dirty
Checking the resting angle of the spring plates. I used a jack and a screwdriver to relieve the preload
My rod is showing
Drop plates installed. The single most difficult part of the night...trying to get the emergency brake cable and sleeve bloody hooked back up! I hate that thing!
Before...
After...
Before...
After...
So looking at these pictures, I can see that I didn't really get much of a drop in the rear with the 3" drop plates. WTF? Maybe I need a little less preload? |

Quick update...decided to install new brake shoes while we're at it:
Getting the 66-67 rims prepped for powder coating. Ground off the nubs so I can do early caps
I was going to blast the rims myself, but found out that a $90 blasting pod just won't cut it. Just using it to even out the ground nubs

Got wheels back from the powder coater today. Ran to the tire shop to get the tires mounted. I got a call from them in the afternoon saying that they couldn't mount them and that I should come pick them up, they were going to just refund my money, a little disappointed. Went to another tire shop and they were able to get the job done. I guess it comes down to experience...
Also, the longer braided brake lines came in today...almost ready to get back on the road, just need to install brake lines, rear brake shoes, adjust and bleed the system and I'm rolling her out of the garage!
Still thinking about early caps on these...
