|
|
I'm building and upright engine for my bay. It has a stock 1600 case, 74mm stroke, and stock 85.5 bore. I started building it up and got to the point where I was going to attach the rods. When I went to attach the first rod, I found that it was too wide to fit.
Here is a picture of the rod.
I measured the inside width of the crankshaft and it was roughly .902" then I measured the outside of the connecting rod - roughly .930". Is this a commonly found problem? I am prepared to purchase new rods if that is necessary. I just found it to be very strange. _________________ Until they're all restored... |

?????????? strange. the crank is about normal. those rods are WAY wide? i measured a few i have and there no where near that wide? get another set of rods. or take the time to machine them to fit? not a normal problem. |

Are you sure they are not type 4 rods? _________________ '57 oval window deluxe,Agave green(L240) 2276cc w/51.5 IDA's

They very well could be Type 4 rods! I bought them attached to a supposedly 1600, 69mm crank, but they guy who sold it to me could've been wrong. I only paid 25 for the crank and rods, no big deal. What's odd is that it is setup for a Type 1 engine. I don't know the differences between a Type 1 crank/rods, and a Type 4. _________________ Until they're all restored... |

I think all type4 and WBX use a larger piston pin size..........right? that should be a dead giveaway
I donno man, better check the size of both ends and the length before you think about narrowing them, and if you do try to narrow then so the bearing is centered. |

Doesn't look like a T4 rod to me, but it's hard to tell without a full pic. I have a set of recon Bus 2.0 rods in the garage, they are visibly beefier than that one. A lot heavier too.... _________________ Build thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212747

Oh, yeah, I bet your right! 40hp are wider
Don't they use rod bolts instead of bolts and nuts? |

First thing I thought of too. They can be resized by taking ~.020" off each side - but the pins are only 20mm - won't fit the pistons. _________________ 71 Ghia Coupe - stock body - no rust! Powered by a 2110 W/Dual HPMX 44's - Rancho Pro Street Transaxle - A/C by Gilmore

The crankshaft is not a crappy Chinese one to my knowledge. I've always heard of SCAT making nice parts. And I decided to not mess with machining rods and just went ahead and bought new ones since they weren't too expensive. Thanks for clearing up what the parts I had belonged to! _________________ Until they're all restored... |
