Does anyone know who supplies the correct size chrome dash trim for a '64 Bug? The ones I ordered are too narrow compared to the ears on the fuel gauge.

Thanks
Jack

Did you get the right year? I have the set from WW and everything matches with the gas gauge.

I have a 64 vert and had to get the chrome for the glove compartment. It was correct. Normally WW is a good company. Do not know what to tell you except you can find OE parts on Samba from tie to time.

Welcome to the repop world...
Seriously.... do you really think that will be noticeable when placed on the dash with gaps in between....

I've had NOS pieces vary in height and width and shape that much right out of the German boxes...

If thats truly so .....you dont have too many options..

Have WW send you replacements, or refund your money so you can find and buys original parts.
I agree by your pic, the profile is a bit off, but most of the time.. the fuel gauge trim is not the exact profile as the trim even on original parts.

Actually all I really need is the glove box trim. I thought I'd buy the whole setup new to make it easier. I guess I wasnt expecting this - I've restored a 356C & a bunch of Alfas so I've seen repro issues.

I just hope people are honest on the condition of their used stuff.

Yeah Volkswagens... are a whole nother class when it comes to parts...and cars in general.
You obviously know ... by your above statement.
Try.... re....building or resurrecting, a really rare or odd car...
Vw's are a breeze to find parts, and find parts cheap, even the good parts are cheap.. just maybe not the best. Quality control is a joke...
Im just thankful parts ARE available, so I'm not too critical on these little tin beaters.
Vw's are merely only one of my specialties.. Wink

I purchased the dash trim from WW for my '60. (CIP also sells it and describes it as being German.). I just was not really happy with it so I ended up getting all my original pieces rechromed. They were fairly pitted so it was not cheap. However they came out beautiful and I am glad I went that route. Hopefully you can find some glovebox trim that does not need replating. If not and you do have to replate it, it may make the other trim pieces look a bit shabby if they are not perfect. Just depends on how much you want to spend.

The tin trim after 1960 are not chrome but more like anodized . They are not the heavy chromed pot metal trim like found in the 58-60's.

Good point VOLKSWAGNUT. A couple of other points -

1) This is a pic of the WW repro trim I ordered in 2010 and decided not to use. Measurements are the same as those posted by jackro. - 11 mm

2) Measuring an original trim piece(1960) it also corresponds to jackro's measurement of an original 1964 piece - 13mm . This would indicate that even though the material composition of the trim changed in 1961, the dimensions did not.

This thread also seems to confirm that the repro trim is about 2 mm narrower than original. Sounds like if you want a perfect match you are going to have to find a good original.

I measured the radio trim plate ears on my car and they also measure 13 mm. So all the original pieces are very consistent in width.

I was not to pleased with the repop trim from WW either. I think I could deal with the size difference if it at least looked like the factory. It has a rounded edge and the factory comes to a point. Seams weird that they couldn't get that right.

Factory trim is the bottom one
