Does it charge while running? Generator light on? Loose belt? Bad regulator?

Running generator? Alternator?

Check voltage output while running. Assuming a generator, my first suspicion would be loose belt, worn brushes, bad regulator. Do you hear noise coming from the generator while running? What is your belt tension? Inspect the brushes, and shine on the contact points.

Is your generator light on while running? If you turn the key without starting, both warning lights come on?

Start with the generator light. Same bulb as your illumination lights. Pull and switch if its just a burned bulb, the report back.

My warning lites don'twork. I know..... belt is good and tight. Now i have drove this bus for 8 years so brushes should be changed. I will check the yes gen output. Which should be good that the lights are bright. Is it possible that i shorted out something when i removed the lights? Oh and fuses are good.

How the generator light behaves tells you if the regulator is suspect, or car is charging while driving. (In addition to broken fan belt while driving). I also seem to recall the electrical system doesn't charge right without the light, but will defer to the other Samba experts.

Thought I remembered hearing that before... Does the generator, not just alternator, need the gen light functioning to work properly?

If you have a generator, no indicator light is needed for proper operation. An alternator is different - without the indicator light, the alternator won't work. Power backfed from the light "kick-starts" alternator operation.
