Had her for 8 days now.
The good - Engine runs great, Starts Great, Shifts Great. Everything is included/original except front cot. Undercarriage in great shape. Lots of expensive mechanical work done by PO via VW specialist.
The bad - Lots of rust, poor re-sprays, and usual bits and pieces need to be addressed (fuel lines, engine foam, etc). Needs new popup canvas as well.
Heading over to Asheville VeeDub for a consult and plan of attack for the body work.
Interior wise I'm going to stay original except for paneling pieces. I'm planning on some bead board style work to brighten it up a tad and be just a lil custom. Pergo flooring as well.

I've got a perfect Gerson repair panel for the driver's floor if you plan to repair it. Nice ride. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Nice, keep the green carpet as Pergo is really cold to step on in the morning. Looks like a replacement engine as its a GE case vs the GD a 77 should have. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

Definitely, PO called it a "2.0L Porsche" engine, but I knew better. Rebuilt 78 w/ low miles. Runs nice. _________________ 1977 Sage Green Deluxe Campmobile - "Turtel"

Thanks...that was pre-scrub down as well. I'm pretty happy so far. Said to my wife "Ya know, if we could just write a check for the body work, paint, and front seats we'd have a show quality bus!"
That's a massive, massive "IF" however. _________________ 1977 Sage Green Deluxe Campmobile - "Turtel"

Looks like a keeper. The interior looks great. I have a Chrome yellow 77 Westy. Is that original paint? The green looks a little off? _________________ 1972 VW Westy (Hit by dumptruck)

Ha, that's about where I'm at on my bus!
I'd encourage you to remove the interior completely for a good cleaning underneath everything. I almost skipped that step with my bus, but am so happy I went "all the way". The amount of trash, dirt, animal droppings, etc. I cleaned out was amazing. It will help get rid of that old bus musty smell too if you have it. Check out my thread (link in sig) if you want to see my gutting/cleaning pix. As long as you don’t have any repairs to make it should only take you half a day, start to finish. There’s an awesome thread here-> http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=291736 detailing the interior removal process. Oh, and you just might find some cool treasures too! _________________ 1976 Westy

There's been various bits re-sprayed in either an off color or poor quality that faded in the GA sun!
Bala, I will consider your advice. All I have found so far is trash and a rusty old wrench! _________________ 1977 Sage Green Deluxe Campmobile - "Turtel"

Feels OK I guess, but being such a newb I don't know how it "should" feel. I've taken some corners at speed and don't feel like it's going to roll over. The rear shocks look very old and the fronts are mismatched, but lots of higher priority items. Tires are not properly rated and need to be replaced. _________________ 1977 Sage Green Deluxe Campmobile - "Turtel"

Have the firewall pulled and I have replaced all the return fuel vapor lines. Waiting on my German Supply fuel line kit and a fuel filler neck to complete everything.
Should get back to regular driving soon!
Oh...and I'm legal w/ a plate and title on the way. _________________ 1977 Sage Green Deluxe Campmobile - "Turtel"

Is there anything left of your front carpet? If you're replacing it with another, I'd be interested in your original one if its not full of holes. |

Happy to report EVERY single fuel line in Turtel has been replaced. I even did the filler neck and connector piece. It was a long tough job for a newb, but I feel great for getting it done and now have ZERO fuel smell!
I can highly recommend the fuel line kits sold by German Supply.
Ripped out the old canvas, ordered new canvas and seals, and laundered all the cushion fabric. _________________ 1977 Sage Green Deluxe Campmobile - "Turtel"
