froze up while static camping at a ski area for 3 days. The belt was original 1996. So was the one that just broke at SyncroSolstice, on Detlev's AEL, with iirc about 18k miles on it

How many miles do you have on that timing belt?

and Congratulations! You just dodged a head replacement bullet.

How does one make it this long without ever replacing a t-belt, and by inference, the waterpump and t-stat?

I dodged it because of you it was your ideal to check it out. I did get 40 or 50K miles out of it I do not pay attention to the odometer any more so who knows.
