Ok so with tools in hand went to adjust valves for the first time on my new project. Got the valve cover spring to drop down on the passenger side but it is stopped by a manifold enough that I can't get the valve cover off. So what am I doing wrong? |

Mine are a tight squeeze, try tilting the top of the valve cover back towards you _________________ 71 super auto stick basically original minus a couple resprays

Is it possible that the bale that holds the cover on is upside down? |

I tried pulling back on the top but had some resistance and didn't want to damage the gasket. Thought about removing the spring but figured I'd ruin the tension |

That bale will come out of the head using a prying instrument (I use a bake adjustment spoon). Remove it, take out the valve cover, adjust the valves. When you re-install it, you may need to take it over to the bench vise (or whatever) and give it a little bend to make sure that pressure is being applied evenly over the whole valve cover/.
By the way, usually the "tab" on the valve cover goes in the upper right hand corner when it is back in there. |

The gasket should be the least of your worries when adjusting valves and should always be replaced when doing so. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

My concern was if I couldn't get the cover off and screwed up the gasket and resulting in a major leak. I have new gaskets ready to go... |
