We are still getting to know our new-to-us 77 Westy.
We took a drive today to take some Holiday card photos and we had an issue with stalling. We had the same issue first time we took it out last week. Here are the symptoms:
Engine starts and runs fine at first. We take it out of our neighborhood and into the city. About 10 - 15 minutes after starting, when rolling up to a stop, as soon as I put the clutch in, the engine dies. I come to a stop, start the engine, it starts just fine. But as soon as we take off again, the engine again dies. I coast to the side of the road, put the transmission in neutral, start the engine successfully.
From this point on, it runs fine. We drive, sit for 20 - 30 minutes taking photos, then move to another location, again stop for 10 - 15 minutes taking photos. All this time the bus starts just fine, runs just fine, no noises or issues.
The same exact thing happened last week when we took it out. It stalled 2 - 3 times, and then after the last time of us getting it started, it ran fine.
When it stalls, it doesn't seem like an electrical issue, more like a fuel issue (acts like its running out of fuel.)
My thoughts are either fuel pump or maybe fuel filter?
Again, this only happens when we first start out. If we drive it a lot (we drove all day today) it runs fine once it warms up.
Thanks in advance! _________________ Martin

Tell everyone more about your engine? Is it a type 4 running its original fuel injection? Or has it been converted to carb/s? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

if still FI do a smoke test to look for manifold leaks. _________________ George Carlin:

Engine is the 1970cc with factory Bosch EFI.
So it sounds like vacuum leak? _________________ Martin

Start with replacing the injector seals if they are more than 4 or 5 years old. _________________ George Carlin:

not really an answer to your issue, but if you do the new seals on the injectors (good tip) and if you have injectors out for new seals...clean them/have them cleaned. Small extra step if you already have them out. And check the flexible fuel lines while you are at that if you are working in that area. |
