|
|
So, my wife wanted to drive my bus. I gave her the tutorial, she's driven it before but its been a few years so I wasnt too worried. But when I was a concert with my daughters she called me and said she couldnt get the parking brake to release. I didnt think you could screw that up but I talked her through how to disengage it. I became a little worried when she said "I've pulled on it as hard as I can and it still wont release" I then told her to leave it alone and I'd fix it when I got home. This is what I found.
As you can see, she pulled on it so hard that the retaining pawl is now past the end of the shaft. I thought that I could just lift the pawl with a screwdriver or pry bar and allow the shaft to go back to its normal position, but that is not working. Has this ever happened to anyone else or any ideas on how to fix it? |

That's a good'un you have there. So a screwdriver, when wedged in there and rotated against the pawl doesn't release it?
A BFScrewdriver wiggled just the right way would get it out quick, but it will porbably bang up your mechanism, so let's think of a more elegant solution...
Yeah I've got nothing..... _________________ WTB: 215mm Type 4 flywheel. Cash in hand.

| I wrestled with a BF screwdriver for about 20 minutes and made no progress, that's usually my limit. I dont want to apply to much pressure for fear of damaging the unit. This old girl is my daily driver and cant afford for her to be down for too long. That and replacing the parking brake assembly is a *&%$ without removing the dash. |

Have someone pull like hell on the handle while you lift the pawl and hold it up while they let it back in. Once it's free you'll have to remove the coil spring and unscrew the handle assy from that threaded rod to get the pawl flipped back over.
Have you ever considered adjusting your brakes? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Take out the pin that holds the shaft to the black part. (Sorry for the bad discription, brain fart). That's how I repaired my pawl. As Bd said, adjust your brakes and that will not happen. _________________ __________

After you adjust your brakes. Adjust your Parking brake and tell your wife it wasn't her fault.
Good Luck

The Pawl needs to be in the position it is in the picture. When you are done.

That's the pin I was talking about.
Here's a pic of how far your e-brake should move when properly adjusted.
