West Coast Metric or Wolfsburg West? I don't want to cut any holes for vent wing shaft or pivot arm. |

I've never seen vent wing seals for the 64/older models where they were precut for the latch plate and upper pivot. About 5 years ago I even went and bought some supposedly OEM seals that ended up being just the same as what everyone else sells.

Thanks Andy,
I didn't consider the latch plate cut. I did find out no holes have to be drilled or anything cut on West Coast Metric's seal. But the latch plate was not asked about. My last time around with rubber was Rocky Mountain motor Works years 20 ago. I am still however, for a reason I can't remember, still using the 1962 original left vent wing seal, It needs to be changed. Trying to find a good one. |

Correction on that upper pivot slot, it is there! I was thinking about the time I ripped a new seal there during the install process.
But the bottom latch plate slot, that's always been missing going back to the first such seals I bought back in 1992 from WW, and all the seals I've ever seen since then look just the same. I just pulled the one out of storage that I got 5 years ago, it's a Vibrasil brand and has those cast-in date codes of 5, 04, 90 (or probably 06 upside down) 03 and 07. I suspect the 5 was 1995.
These were the seals I got back in 92:

Just did these on my wife's 64... Used WW seals. The upper pivot was slotted, but , the latch had to cut by me. The fit was good for sure... _________________

Thanks,
Does your vent close flush with no gaps next to the bar? |

Yes it seals up fine.....
Make no mistake, These seal are a Bitch to install... patience is your friend on this job. Take your time and you will get it done.
The only problem was the new felt channel for the bar that the window slides in. It is WAY too tight and needed to be "opened " up a bit to get the window to work correctly.... spent some time on that one as well...

Getting ready to do this to my 67. I have done it on bay buses and it is no fun. Allow lots of time. Be patient and try not to drink beer as it is best after you are done. I always use WW rubber and it is the best as far as I'm concerned. _________________ 1967 bug recovering from a PO

Thanks for reminding me. It's been a long time since I've done this. I do remember that getting the seal "rib" fully in the slot calls for a rest of wits. Fortunately, I only have to do the drivers side. |

I installed West Coast Metric Wing seals in my 1961 Bug about 30 years ago. they are still soft and pliable, and are of great quality. They have outlived the original German rubber by more than double!
I highly recommend West Coast metric, assuming they make them the same way three decades later. _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Have been waiting to order the rubber and some other stuff too. Both the WW and West Coast Metric look good and sound OK from the answers I got from both companies and you guys. The other items I'm ordering are from WW so I will likely order just the left rubber from WW too. They are sold in pairs from West Coast and if for some reason I'm not happy with WW, I'll just order the pair WCM. I was looking for complaints really in regard to one or both of the companies, but as I said both sound good--as good as you can get today.
Thanks again. |

I agree with you-WCM has a good reputation. I remember years ago going to bed at night the with the Rocky Mountain Motor Works, Wolfsburg West, West Coast Metric and BFY catalogues to look at and dreaming about what to buy. We were fortunate then to be able to get superior parts from each one. Some didn't make it, but WW and West Coast are still here doing their best, I think, to keep us up to speed. Both still honestly answer your questions. Good management makes good companies. I trust both. |

Let us know what yours end up looking like.
When I ordered that last pair I had hoped they would more resemble the originals. When I got the "same old" stuff I was disappointed. Wondering if everyone's price on these was about the same (which would tend to indicate just one manufacturer's product being sold everywhere) I just looked a couple of sites. To my surprise I found this at CIP1... I've NEVER seen aftermarket vent wing seals with the "ribbed" corner like the originals had. I may just have to buy a set of these.

I've used all WCM rubber. Installing rubber trim is something I wish to NEVER repeat. |

yep try the ones Andy just posted, as you have to cut reliefs in them anyway to make them fit.
I redid mine in 1997 but don't remember where they came of, probably Rocky Mountain Motor Works. They are still nice. _________________ Rick

Just hit the submit button on Wolfsburg West and got the CIP advice. Ordered from them also. Said free shipping, but got charged anyway. Hope the vent rubber is more accurate than the sites promise of free shipping. So, Got a pair from CPI (never used these people before) and one left from WW.
Will let you know within a week my thoughts |

I will be interested to hear your thoughts on the CIP seals. As far as the free shipping at CIP, I think your order has to total at least $99 to qualify. _________________ 1960 beetle

I got the VEWIB German window rubber from CIP1 and was extremely pleased. I used WW rubber for the doors and was pleased as well with the fit. I didn't have to do the relief cuts in the bend as it fit good. I had the original ones still and copied all the cut locations, even the one on the bottom by where the latch plate screws go. _________________ 64 stock bug, 12V (converted 6v unit), 40 hp, all documents even sales contract and dealer window sticker! |

OK, Wolfsburg West got here today. Looks like the slot/indention for the latch stop is 1 1/2" inches toward the window. This won't work unless you want to cut another slot for the stop. Correct me if I'm wrong. Will definitely wait on CIP rubber to check. I have a show on may 3rd, but this can wait. Opinions please. Chime in Andy if your off duty.
