I just had the engine rebuilt on my '86 Westy 2.1L. I have put just 900 miles on it and very occasionally the oil light and buzzer goes off, but only when I have been travelling about 55-60MPH and then getting off the freeway, after going over 15 miles. Buzzer stays on while I'm stopped, but when I move forward it turns off and it's fine. Around town no problem. Runs great, took it back to the mechanic twice and can't replicate the experience. Any idea what's going on? Mechanic advises me to continue driving it, he's been repairing VWs for over 40 years seems quite knowledgable and has great references.

First thing is to establish that you do have oil pressure using a gauge.

Either a hand held mechanics style or a mounted in car type (I'm running VanCafe's oil gauge kit, very pleased with it)

Once you know you have oil pressure start by checking out your sender units for proper function.

The Bentley has extensive instructions on doing this and also checking out the dynamic pressure system.

Honestly, VW literature does say that an oil warning light after a run can be considered normal.

Verify pressure, move forward from there.

Hello, you should verify the actual oil pressure with a gauge. On my 86, if you unplug the oil temp sender switch located under the waterpump and ground the lead, that should disable the dynamic oil pressure system. If it still buzzes and flashes with the lead grounded at the switch, you have an electrical problem. If the light stays off, it is possible, the wrong switch was installed. Somebody today posted another thread about the oil warning light. By design, after a certain rpm if the pressure drops to below a specified threshold, the buzzer should sound and the light should flash. Good luck.

X3 on an oil pressure gauge. You and your mechanic need to know what is going on.

Even mechanics with 40 years experience sometimes have problems. The good ones will fix them.

Two things come to mind:

-Do you have a quality (Mann/Mahle) oil filter and proper weight oil in the engine?

-Are the proper spec oil pressure switches installed?

I would check these items before proceeding further.

Get a gauge on there as others have suggested. Low oil pressure at hot idle is the only warning you will get that your rods are about to let go.

Did the person who rebuilt the engine do what I did? The Victor Reinz gasket kit comes with the wrong thickness oil pump cover gasket. Mine measured 0.014" thick instead of 0.004" thick. I had a hot engine oil pressure issue.
