I just had the engine rebuilt on my '86 Westy 2.1L. I have put just 900 miles on it and very occasionally the oil light and buzzer goes off, but only when I have been travelling about 55-60MPH and then getting off the freeway, after going over 15 miles. Buzzer stays on while I'm stopped, but when I move forward it turns off and it's fine. Around town no problem. Runs great, took it back to the mechanic twice and can't replicate the experience. Any idea what's going on? Mechanic advises me to continue driving it, he's been repairing VWs for over 40 years seems quite knowledgable and has great references. |

Hello, you should verify the actual oil pressure with a gauge. On my 86, if you unplug the oil temp sender switch located under the waterpump and ground the lead, that should disable the dynamic oil pressure system. If it still buzzes and flashes with the lead grounded at the switch, you have an electrical problem. If the light stays off, it is possible, the wrong switch was installed. Somebody today posted another thread about the oil warning light. By design, after a certain rpm if the pressure drops to below a specified threshold, the buzzer should sound and the light should flash. Good luck. |

is it a complete rebuild (main bearings etc..) or only top end rebuild (replacing heads)? |

Two things come to mind:
-Do you have a quality (Mann/Mahle) oil filter and proper weight oil in the engine?
-Are the proper spec oil pressure switches installed?
I would check these items before proceeding further. _________________ '87 Westy Weekender - daily driver on salt-free roads

Get a gauge on there as others have suggested. Low oil pressure at hot idle is the only warning you will get that your rods are about to let go. |
