Got my 1300 almost all back together and ready slip back into the car. I have got all the tins back on, but the Intake gaskets are not fitting right. At least that what I think these gaskets are. Maybe these gaskets are for the exhuast. They look like two flange shaped peices of aluminum with some gasket material sandwiched in between. There are a bunch of them in the kit. I think I might be using the wrong gasket but nothing else in the kit looks like it would work.

Yeah, those sound like exhaust gaskets. 1300? Single port?

Those take the silver ring gaskets in the kit I think.

Don't take my word for it, other, more knowledgeable folks will chime in.

sounds like exhaust gaskets. Don't remember seeing metal intake gaskets before. The intake should be made out of paper or like a cork type material.

Like Cletus said, the intake "gasket" for a single port is actually a metal donut that fits into the head, and gets squished as the intake is torqued down.

Smile Intake man gskt on a SP is a round copper looking larger then a nickel and smaller the a quarter, The sharp edge should go DOWNwards into the head.

Gskt kits have gone a bit universal to cover the 1200,1300,1500 and 1600 engines. Extra stuff just needs to be put aside for a whatever rainy day.

When building engines accumulated a lot of stuff from those kits.

Look here for a photo of all contents of a good gasket kit- http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=527020

The ones you need for your 1300 intake are #13.

You must be thinking of some other car, or a performance engine. Stock aircooled VW intake gaskets are metal to transfer heat to the intake manifolds. Even the DP gaskets (#15 in the pic) are metal.

Paper or other insulating material (like cork) are okay for dual-carb setups where the length of the intakes are both short and they are directly above the heads. Paper and cork probably seal better than metal, but don't use them for stock center mounted intakes.

Dunkin' Donuts are preferred---------------although if you are planning on driving the car in Canada you should use Tim Hortons.
