I removed my sink drain plumbing a few years ago and now I'm putting it back in and I have a few questions...

Is the P-trap really needed? The piping for the P-trap and vent uses up a lot of cupboard space, and I don't see much chance of sewer gas getting into the camper since I never connect to a sewer system. I'm tempted to make up a simpler arrangement that just goes straight to the bottom outlet without a trap, and maybe without a vent.

Will the Vanagon drain fit the 76-79 Westy sink? From the pictures I've seen, it's much tidier.

Should there be a threaded collar on the drain pipe to attach it to the sink outlet? If there was one in the past, it must have broken and gotten lost. Right now, I don't see how I can attach the pipe to the sink. The Westy is at my friend' s house, but I'll try to get over there and take a picture to better illustrate what I mean.

Thanks for any advice.

I've often wondered about the usefulness of the trap in my bus too. As you say, no chance of sewer gases coming up it, and it seems like a place for crud to collect.

If you aren't connecting to an RV park's sewer system I don't think it's necessary, all the plumbing and vents on North American spec Westys had to comply with UL/CSA plumbing codes just in case it actually ended up in a sewered campsite.
Some sort of trap to stop spiders and other creepy crawlys may be handy though if suprise visitors in the sink give any of your fellow campers the heebie jeebies, the early morning screams may disturb the peace and quiet of the wilderness Razz

RV and trailer sales/service places sell parts. The sink drain is probably a universal size and you'll find it there

That is the only reason I left my trap in place.
