I had a bit of a doubt concerning speedometers and its red marks for the gear selection. Did 67 beetle models have those marks from the factory or were those some kind of accessory available at the dealer? |

Consensus is.. the shift speed marks went away early 60's and came back at some point in 1966/1967..
No.. Not an accessory

All beetles I have seen at auto shows in my country don’t have the marks, including mine, however I have seen those marks in beetles brought over from the USA. And yes, even the pre-60 beetles don’t have those marks. Could’ve been some kind of region exclusive feature?? |

It seems that in those topics the marks are present in 67 beetles. Thanks for the quick replies! |

Yes, just a postscript... I checked scanned photos from the mid-1970s of the dashboards of two '67s (my USA model and my brother's gray-market Euro), and both have the shift points marked.
Both are original speedos, but note my brother's Euro had a MPH speedo, which may have been changed when imported; we don't know the original country of origin to determine whether it was originally mph or kph. |

I am part of a Puerto Rico Volky Club, a country with a mishmash of us-spec and euro-spec bugs and buses as a part of our culture. VW around the world! |

So, whether it was euro or us, and both had shift marks, could I make the marks myself or is it all a sealed unit?? |

It is possible to take the bezel off and remove the glass, then add marks. It's really hard to do the marks well and have them last. To exchange the face you have to remove the needle and you will probably break it, or foul the calibration.
If it's a restoration issue and HAS to be right, I'd just swap a marked speedo and reset its odo to match yours.
Otherwise your ears and butt give you the shift points more reliably than the speedo ever could! |

If you do open it up, beware the face is very susceptible to damage, finger prints are very hard to remove, and show up well. You cant wipe the face with a cloth often without out the painted design being ruined, the old paint can flake off easily, and the matt finish shows finger prints and wipe marks. It is really easy to ruin the finish. I recommend you find one already marked rather than risk ruining yours, check out the want ads on Samba. also note for authentic look, the speedos should have a date code stamped on the housing, seen from the trunk side, look for one that is close to, but not exceeding your Bugs build date.
Good Luck

PS how did you make it from the hurricane, hopefully ok? _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

Ok, so that’s what I will do, I prefer to have two flawless speedometers rather than living with a butchered one.
PS: As for hurricanes: Dorian, barely a drizzle, just a few droplets here and there; for Maria, 110 days without power. |

I think I'd make a set of "sticky dots" using a hole punch on a "peel and stick" vinyl sheet. Put a dot at each of the speeds where the mark would be. Nothing permanent and you don't have to take anything apart. Just stick it to the front glass. Choose your color(s). Easy peasy. |
