Welcome any thoughts.

Just as it's almost fully engaged and clutch thumps.

Running an inline 4 so know there's a lot of movement in the engine.

If someone could confirm that the inline 4's take diesel mounts, that'd be helpful too.

Cheers,

Do you mean you feel thumps (with your foot) at the clutch pedal, or does the car 'jerk'? Or both?

You are right to focus on engine mounts. You may be able to see engine mount problems just by looking at them. Look at the dirt/dust, and compare appearance of the left and right mounts, look for motion that has disturbed the dust. Maybe post pics of the mounts if you can't tell.

Remove the engine cover and watch the engine movement as the clutch is engaged. Can do this from inside looking over the bench seat, or from the bumper (ideally 1st gear not reverse gear). Cool

on the old Microbus, one could check the motor mounts by grabbing the two tail pipes (make sure they are cool first) and whilest observing the motor relative to the body, shake the tail pipes up and down, if the enigne moved a whole lot, you know the mounts is bad, so sad Crying or Very sad

so yeah, look for motion as helper moves clutch in and out, peer u der the enigne and from above, focus on movement at the mount areas. also look for loosened , backed out, broken mount studs.

good luck

you may have broken mounts, but this can also be a worn or oily clutch plate.

Two man job.
One to watch the engine, one to play driver and on & off the clutch pedal.

See if the engine rocks off the mounts, watch if the trans mount is solid.
