What are people smoking these days? I was browsing thru the Vanagon section of the ads and found the asking price on many out of this world.
There was one I thought was asking for 70K? Does it include a several bags of coke inside? Geehuz.
Not sure where to put this - I just find this stuff amusing. |

Anyone can put any price on anything.
That said, the current market is the lowest I've seen in the past 10 years.
When someone asks me in person how much I want for my van, I usually say 1.5x what I think it’s worth. It’s my way of saying, "I’m not looking to sell, but if you’ve got crazy money and want to fund my upgrade to a Syncro, I’ll consider it." _________________ "Jo Ann" - '83.5 Westfalia EJ22e w/Peloquin

Agree, prices seem to be dropping overall — but think it’s only a short and quick reversal when so many hit the road in early covid, realized they might survive after all, missed and wanted delivered pizza and a heater knob on the wall and easier access to Neil Young revival concerts, and went “back home.”
It’ll reverse soon. Probably a great time to buy. _________________ 1984 Westfailure/2.1 Digijet/5.43 Ring & Pinion/Peloquin/D-rated BFG KO2s

Agreeing that this should be in Off-Topic.
That said, some people DO have tons of stupid money, so why not?
Other people are at whit's end, trying to NOT let their soon-to-be-former-spouse let the rig sell on the cheap to says F - U, I got the twenty bux of the $40 that was my half of the sale, you'll get your $20 by check within 10 business days.
I was watching one Syncro sit at ~$90K a few years back, it had the look of the latter of the two. Poor guy put a decade into the wish-build only to have his now-Ex getting half of the sale, IF SOLD.
I know a guy who agreed in a divorce settlement that, when sold, he would get half the proceeds from the house they had owned..... Former wife still occupies the place, and I am guessing she will not die before he does. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

15-20 yrs ago, I frequently got approached about selling.
I'd ask them what they thought it was worth.
That seemed to throw them for a loop, and they'd mutter something. Sometimes they'd offer up a great price that I probably should've taken if I was in a realistic headspace.
Others had obviously seen far too many "reality" car flipping shows, and would try out TV techniques on me. Those people were fun to play with.. |

The same stuff they were smoking in 1985, 2008, 2013, 2017, 2020, etc, etc. People have been reacting to the perceived high prices of Vanagons since they were introduced.
We cover this topic at least once a year whether we need to or not:

BaT prices do show a decline from the peak a few years ago:

In Dawson Creek on a trip along the Alaskan Hwy a few years ago, I had a guy pull up to us and say "if I pay you cash right now, how much would you take for your Bus" and I smiled and kept going as we were about to stop at a pub for dinner and the guy spun around and drove across a few lanes and followed us into the parking lot and asked the same question again.
I think he had been watching too many reality tv car shows so after putting down my hatchet as I thought he was going to try to carjack us, I leaned out the window and said "it's priceless to me and not for sale".
He mumbled to himself and drove off and I didn't start feeling comfortable again until Dawson Creek was miles behind us. _________________ *******************************

BAT is a high-end sample in itself.

Interesting.
Granted current value was known, discussed to the nth degree, and finalized 25 years ago. It sure seems silly to start it again.
And on the same vehicle!
What do people think, the Vanagon is the only vehicle in the world? _________________

True and there may be more or less price elasticity at the high-end. All antique cars may be considered a high-end discretionary purchase, with Vanagons being extraordinarily inexpensive old cars compared to the rest of what's on BaT.
Also, Hagerty says Vanagons are a leading decliner in values at -10% which is probably a more robust evaluation of the market.

Uhh, erm, well... I like their thingies and I like having a place for them to do it in the grass. So I can watch. Uhh, Ya. Like that. Ya, uh huh, quite jocular. Droll, yes, quite droll.

Everything seems expensive, food, fuel, housing, clothing, tools, furniture, stocks, gold.
Or maybe it is rather the case that dollars, the green paper things have become worth so little? What might drive that value down?

Maybe Vanagons should become the “key economic indicator” for inflation instead of $7/doz eggs! _________________ “Most everyone’s mad here. You may have noticed I am not quite all there myself.” — Cheshire Cat, Adventures of Alice in Wonderland
