I have a 1970 cabriolet which im doing the inside in off-white, seats, steering wheel etc....The question I have is, has anyone tried to paint the round rubber dash switches into other colours? (Wipers/Lights etc)

I want to do these too in an off-white colour and presume with a decent rubber-friendly paint theyd be ok. Does anyone know or has anyone done this?

I cant find any other options for this model than the standard black rubber ones.

Thanks
Ken

The only thing similar to spraying the hard rubber dash knobs, that I've seen, is leather and vinyl color.......I used to spray ( I went from red to black) the seats in my TR3.......It held up much better than I expected but did need touch up from time to time.
I imagine it would be the same thing for the dash knobs, it would need touch up occasionally ????

If I was going to try it, the only brand I would trust is Sem.

https://www.semproducts.com/products/brand/classic-coat

I have used it to fresh up headliners, door panels, carpet, and here are some before and after pics of my Type 3 AC unit rehab.

You will pay a little more, but I have found this to be an outstanding brand of colorants.

Haven't painted the knobs, but the dash and other parts. Used vinyl dye, and it holds up pretty good. Even painted my running board rubber, no problem.

That looks nice. How easily does it rub off?

Not easily. It's amazingly tough. Cleaning and degreasing is essential. My running board rubbers are holding up just fine even though it's on the outside.

Does that do a full color CHANGE, or shades of colors? The dash right now is black, but it might be interesting to consider matching the rest of the green interior.

Yes, you get full coverage. My dash pad was Black before painting (only colour VW made them in), and so was my centre console.
6-7 very thin coats of dye gives you a complete colour change.

I second using the SEM system. It is flexible, and they have a pre-treatment that actually softens the material temporarily allowing the paint to fuse with the surface.

I used it on my GTI years ago as part of a fix for some ill-chosen soft-touch material VW used. It never failed in any way after many FL summers to spite ridiculous interior temps.

I then used it on my bug to freshen up the original kick panels as well as other odds and ends like the door release inserts.

Flat4, echoing others here, it looks awesome. Can you be specific about the name brand of the "vinyl dye" you used?

Thanks,

Victor

Thanks! I'm danish and SEM is not available around here. I use a German brand,- MHW. The system is three parts, a cleaner (which seem to lightly dissolve the outer layer of the vinyl), the color itself and a clear "finish spray", that toughens the surface.
Cleaning and prepping and thin coats is the key.
