I'm embarrassed to say it has been two years since I took the bumpers off our late '69 Ghia. They've been blasted and painted and reinstalled incomplete, but I am now ready to put them together.
Or at least I would be if I hadn't just bought a zinc plating kit and I've decided to zinc plate the bolts before the final installation.
Anyway,
I've found assembling and installing the bumpers a little bit tricky, but it's mainly a case of working out the best order to do everything in. So, I thought I would do a pictorial 'how to' to help anyone else who is as visuo-spatially challenged as I am!
I've only done the front bumper at the moment, I will add the rear to this thread when I get around to it. I hope it helps someone!

First, gather the parts together.
This is pasted from another thread, but is a good guide to remind you of the bolt sizes etc:

Bolt the three blade parts of the bumper together.
The shiny, chrome, domed bolt goes on top, of course!
The cat is keeping an eye on things.

Next, it's helpful to assemble the bumper brackets and the painted covers. Theres a rubber grommet between the painted parts. The head of this pointed bolt, and the washer are eventually painted body colour, but keep things loose for the time being.

Next, position ONE overrider (I've done the LEFT) and its backing plate, ready for the long bolt that attaches the black bracket, through the bumper to the overrider.

Now, the central towel rail can be loosely attached to this one overrider.
The central towel rail WILL NOT FIT if both overriders are installed, hence the sequence I am showing!

If you are lucky, your overriders will be stamped to tell you which goes where. This one is stamped VR for Vor Rechts (Front Right) The others are VL, HL and HR, work it out!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As your bolts are loose, you can now slide the other overrider into position. First onto the towel rail, then onto the bumper blade. I should have mentioned to make sure that the rubber edging strips are in place.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You should now be able to slip the painted bracket/cover assembly onto the towel rail, and rotate it down into place and bolt it on to the blade.
Then secure the painted support to the overrider (loosely again).

The outer parts of the towel rails can now be secured. They also have a rubber/plastic grommet protector.
I've mocked up the very outer securing bolt that goes through the bodywork (with its cut rubber sleeve) although obviously this is inserted when the bumper is attached to the car!

Again, the bolts and washers which secure the painted support to the overrider were originally painted body colour. I intend to install the bumper with the bolts all slightly loose, tighten them up, remove the bumper again and THEN paint the bolts, so that the paint is not marred by the spanner/socket.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The final result! As I say, I've taken it all apart again, so that I can zinc plate the bolts, but I'll document the rear bumper in the same way, when I get around to it.

This is a great step-by-step instruction! Thanks very much for putting this together.

I hope this gets added to the stickies...

Great post! Who did your plating? A company across the pond or did you ship them to the states? Everything looks great!

Thanks!
I'm not sure where the parts list and image came from originally. Nicholas (Sputnik60) had used it in a thread and when I found it, I lifted it for my build thread and then lifted it again to help with this thread.
I can't find the original quote now though!

Cheers!
It's the original chrome, just polished up with Autosol polish. I'm very lucky!
The inside of the bumpers were very rusty, but all surface rust, so I had them carefully media blasted and then painted them to match a NOS picture from the classifieds. Eastwood rust encapsulator spray paint from memory. I treated and painted the insides of the towel rails too, so hopefully the bumpers will outlast me!

Ok.
Let's try the rear bumper now, before I lose my enthusiasm!

Like the front, the blades go together with domed nuts and bolts, shiny side up.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The over riders and the bumper supporting brackets aren't so interconnected at the rear, so you can install one overrider, using its 65mm bolt. I've chosen 'HR', hintern rechts, back right.
The outer towel rail attaches with one 18mm bolt. Don't forget the rubber 'grommet'.

Like the front, the centre towel rail won't fit with both over riders in place. The painted support will wriggle in and stand up, out of the way. Then, the centre towel rail slips in and you can juggle it, and the painted support into the other overrider, and bolt it into place.
The painted supports are slightly different and the tubular parts splay out if they're laid down next to each other.
I keep everything pretty loose at this stage, so you can adjust the final position on the car and then do a final tighten and paint the couple of bolt heads that need it.

The second outer towel rail can now be bolted in place (18mm bolt) and the long bolt (55mm) at the towel rail joint loosely placed.
This painted part is vulnerable to damage, so you might want to pad it. Actually, I'm going to wrap it in padding before I assemble this, next time!

The black bumper support brackets bolt on simply, with 15 or 16mm bolts.
Then, there's a fiddly process of attaching the painted covers with a cross head screw. A short screwdriver and a long temper are useful if your screw threads aren't nice and clean! I ended up running a tap and die, which helped.
The painted cover has a bump next to the screw, which seats in a slot in the black support. They should also have a rubber edging strip/seal to protect the car body. The final adjustment will be on the car.

Nearly there!

I've mocked up the end bolts (40mm) and the rubber spacer that keeps the bumper end off the bodywork. Note the orientation. Note also, the large penny washer next to the rubber.

I should have said, ALL of the bumper bolts have a wavy washer. You can see that.

Lastly, the complete bumper assembly, before I took it apart again to clean up the bolts and zinc plate. Another day!
