I have a 69 Coupe with the polished (or used to be) metal rain gutter trim.

My question is, how do you safely remove it?

It has seen it's hard knocks, minor dents, abrasions, etc but being almost 50 years old, it is looking good!
Who at 50 doesn't have a little bit of physical road rash?

I see a Brass Rivet at each end securing it to the roof gutter.
Just accurately center punch it and carefully drill it out? Slip a sacrificial piece of metal behind the rivet so as not to drill into the roof and paint when it breaks through?

And the Brass rivet.....

Oh!
Wait!

I went at the grime with a brush and found that the "Rivet" is actually more akin to a Cotter Pin!

Push it in, and spread the two bits apart on the back side....... (I had to reword this a few times to make it "family friendly" Laughing )

This cotter pins (we call them split pins where I come from) are very, very scarce and thus very, very valuable.

Using a small jewelers size of 90° needle nose pliers, a small screw driver and a small 45° dental pick, I was able to pry up the legs of the "Rivets".

I then used a larger flat blade screwdriver and pushed the "Rivet" out a little.

Next I used a small brad puller and extracted all of the "Rivets".

Two of the four survived the operation.

I then used the larger screwdriver and very gently "Bumped" the trim up and off of the rain gutter.

Great Success!!

I think IF I were going to install these moldings, I would drill the hole for a small round head brass machine screw and tap it. I'm thinking a 4-40 or a 4-48 ....... maybe even smaller.
The finer thread pitch will give more bite in the rain gutter.

I like that..... "Split Rivet" term!

These rivets are 0.0815 (2.07mm) in diameter (a smidgen over 5/64" 0.0781)

Have a head of 0.1695 (4.30mm) in diameter (just shy of 11/64" 0.1719)

Have an overalllength of 0.280 (7.09mm) (just shy of 9/32" 0.2812)

A 4-48 tap requires a size #42 pilot bit. The overall diameter of the screw is 0.0935.

A 3-56 tap requires a size #45 pilot bit. The overall diameter of the screw is 0.0820.

Next to a USA Penny

Is this chrome moulding year specific? I am sure that my 1960 did not have this moulding but the question is whether it should have had this extra piece of chrome.

From chassis no 146 000 001 up to 141 3200 000

From 1966 through 1971 and then there was a design change for 1972

That being said......

The gutter trims have stayed put on my '61 for over 16 years now with no fasteners whatsoever. Just a friction fit over the steel "lip" of the roof gutter.

This is the same style split rivet we use in repairing Guitar case handles and hinges, you can find them at any good luggage repair shop. They even have special pliers to spread the tangs.

Yes, same design for sure but guitar case rivets are MUCH BIGGER, almost twice the size.

OK, ... but be honest - How many times has that Ghia been out of the storage unit in the past 16 years?

It has been 3 or 4 years now since I have driven it------------by the way, when did you last drive yours? Confused

As a matter of fact, I last drove it back only just what seems like yesterday - Cough! 2006 I believe it was.

Embarassed

... but then I'm not the one making claims that a part meant to be fastened on has stayed in place for over 16 years without any fasteners. Smile

On my 1969, the rain gutter molding was held in place by two aluminum pins - no split at all - and there was some smut on the metal below that was probably some kind of adhesive at one point. It took some work to remove it, the pins didn't seem to be doing much.
