| Does anyone have a link to articles on how to rebuild a king pin set up on a '60 bus? Lots of info on the link pins but the king pins seem to be a big secret |

I think it is covered in the factory workshop manual. You need special tools to press them apart. _________________ .

You make you own tools. The first time did this repair all I had available was a press. It is much easier with the tools.
I have some picture of my tools in use in my build thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=40
There are also some guys here who offer the rebuild as a service. |
That's the info I was after. Any idea where I could find the section in the service manual I need without buying the whole $300 manual? |

Where exactly are you finding that price for the manual? You can buy two factory approved brand new manuals for that and still have money left over.
If you can't spring for a manual, maybe you shouldn't be working on cars. One mistake can cost you more than the manual. _________________ .

Agreed.
Don't mess with your spindles, you have a lot riding on them like passengers and a dog. I've had a VW Bus since 76' and there are a few things that need a bit more experience and correct tooling. You need a machine shop for a long lasting job on those Kings, and it may not be just the bushings. Buying new Kings will end-up costing more than a rebuild. Send them to Greg, he may even have a finished pair (for early models) after you send out yours. >period<

Thanks for the pertinent info. My 'rebuilt' spindles from 20years ago simply need new seals and with 40 years wrenching and 10 ground up builds I don't think this is too hard a job. Just looking for info on jigs and tolerances.
Thanks again Michael |

If you just need new seals, slice some new seals, install them and hold them in place with zip-ties. Seriously. It is a hell of a lot less work, and it does the job. The seals are just grease seals to keep dirt out. As long as you grease your king and links regularly, you won't have a problem with it. _________________ .

If you can buy, borrow or fabricate a set of these or something similar and have access to a shop press changing the seals out is pretty straight forward, and should take you slightly less than an hour.
