It is different that's for sure!

He probably used a fabric / vinyl dye?

Enjoy it, I tend to favor old school OG though.

I think the painter has an appreciation for the gal in the passenger mirror? Very motivated man! Details, details, details, wheels and ash tray must have spent days on them alone! Check out the ashtray. I love it. What ever the motivation, it is radiates passion.

Thanks friends
I've owned 7 of these and most were kept stock.
I gave him free reign on this one.
We actually chose a different blue...we couldn't decide between two shades of blue. We went back and forth between this blue and the one that we finally chose "Ford Windveil Blue". He sprayed the whole exterior. And when he was done he thought it just didn't match this creamy white. So he decided to respray it the blue that you see here. (at no charge). He didn't even ask me. But that's the type of trusting relationship that we have. He knew that I trusted him. And he's earned my trust. That's the type of guy he is. So an incredibly caring and gifted man.

Very different. What kind of paint adheres well to plastic?

Regarding the type of paint and process used to get certain custom paints to adhere to vinyl and plastic....I couldn't really tell you. But I can tell you that I tried to scrape it off just to see if it would come off, and it did not.
I feel quite confident that it is there to stay.
I remember him telling me that it takes some type of "chemical process".
Perhaps I could have asked more questions but I didn't. I wasn't planning on "trying this at home". Smile

That dude put a ton of work into that van...as in way way more than he could've feasibly charged you. Way more. By a lot. Seriously.

I mean it.

plastics require a spray of "adhesion promoter", a clear that softens the plastic, and the paint will bond to it.
A normal process with today's plastic bumper covers.
Skip the adhesion promoter and the paint will come off in sheets.

Not to poo on your parade, but the glare off that dash in the Sun is going to be really bad. I applaud the effort but you may want to start looking for a dash cover.

Beautiful! Somewhat similar to a VW CC...

But not one photo of the exterior? Sure, the inside looks great but you be holding out on the other half of the story. Very Happy

My thoughts exactly. There's a reason the majority of dashes are black.
Nice work though.

My dash is Gray as well and no glare. That white will blind you when the sun hits it.
There's a reason that cars do not have white dash tops.

While you can certainly get glare from a semi-gloss black dash, it's the reflection on the windshield that would bother me.
My partner is always tossing her white cap onto the dash and I have to ask her to remove because of the distracting reflections.

Check out the reflections with a black dash, now imagine white.

Again, cool looking job, but I would have wanted a black top like that modern VW.

I agree that the glare will be considerable on sunny days and maybe the solution will be to carry a dash mat. Still, this is a beautiful Bus and the work involved has made it something very special.

My '86 GL Westfalia has the brown dash, which is heavily cracked. I bought a black dash pad when I had the opportunity and have considered how to make this black dash pad brown. Do you know what product your friend used to color your dash pad?
