holy crap, the wintertime threads started early this year.
now, cue the links to factory literature showing VW using the terms Bus, Van, Transporter, etc.
hasn't this horse been beat to death enough over the years already?

I was privileged to have my Dad buy a 7 passenger VW Bus to drive us around in.
My theory is that the Americans invented the Van to move cargo in and it subsequently had seats added to diversify it to carry passengers. The Passenger Van was born. School busses were always intended to carry people. In my little world a VW is a bus until all the seats are removed to carry cargo. Then it's a VW van. |

I think they were only called station wagons in the US for marketing purposes to dance around the chicken tax. I could be wrong. |

so you sit on the floor when you drive a van, unless youre a midget, then I suppose you can stand when driving, but either way it would be awkward. visibility out the windows would be poor if sitting on the floor! _________________ Help Prevent VW Engine Fires, see this link.....Engine safety wire information

I think it was to compete against US-made station wagons as that was their target buyer in a lot of cases _________________ How to Post Photos

I do not ever recall it being advertised as a Station Wagon in Canada. Or a Kombi for that matter.
And I do go back at least as far as some here, probably further back than most. |

I think it was to compete against US-made station wagons as that was their target buyer in a lot of cases |
From Wikipedia, "The Chicken Tax directly curtailed importation of German-built Volkswagen Type 2s in configurations that qualified them as light trucks, that is, commercial vans and pickups.[15]
In 1964, U.S. imports of "automobile trucks" from West Germany declined to a value of US$5.7 million—about one-third the value imported in the previous year. Soon after, Volkswagen cargo vans and pickup trucks, the intended targets, "practically disappeared from the U.S. market."
Since Bus and Van are are a commercial term, the switch to station wagon would make sense. |

What you posted is true but they used the term Station Wagon before 1964.
One earlier ad, I think this 1960:
I'm not sure that law ever applied to passenger vehicles but I don't know if VW had to do anything to get around it for their passenger "Station Wagons" versus Commercial Vehicles.
There is definitely no shortage of 1964-67 Standard and Deluxe Buses in the USA. _________________ How to Post Photos

Looks to me like valet or door man at a finer hotel. Notice the family is well dressed. Harkens back to a time when people took pride in appearance, even June Cleaver wore a pearl necklace to do housework , and gas station attendants wore spiffy looking uniforms or maybe it is a cop searching their luggage for dope. |
