Reinstalling heads on the super fast 1.9L. Is there any other stuff that people recommend for sealant on the head bolts other than the yellow stuff? The stuff I got seems to be a clear oily liquid and not a paste at all. Let me know when you can.
Cheers,

Can I just use the black sealant that I use for the rubber gasket on the head bolts in place of the yellow sealant? or is that a big no? |

Yes, I read that a while back too. I was about to dig into his posts to find a quote and past it here, but now its out in the open, and can be searched for if the need for confirmation is required. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

So when putting back together in steps:
1. Cylinders and pistons go back on. What type of sealant go on the black round gaskets on the bottom of the cylinders?? Maybe a little bit of oil?
2. The green gaskets on the top of the cylinders get a little oil but no sealant correct??
3. The black head gasket gets either the VW black sealant that comes with the gaskets or "the right stuff" on both sides of the gasket?
4. The head bolts get either the yellow VW sealant or more preferably per tencentlife the REINZOSIL sealant?? Im assuming apply the REINZOSIL as you would the yellow stuff with a bead around the mating surface of the head bolt?
I think thats it correct? Let me know when you can

For the O-rings at the cylinder, both green and black I use the slightest amount of Syl-Glide or Dow Corning silicone grease. I use the RTV supplied with the gasket set on the water jacket seal and at the base of the cylinder head acorn nuts. |

First thing I do when I open a gasket kit is to throw that yellow tube of mystery goo away. . |
i have to get better at throwing things... i've got a bunch of those no-name tubes but i would never use one on the cap nuts, no reason to keep them. i really don't like the way it dries/cures into a hard crust that flakes off. so many better things out there. _________________ -dan

The waterboxer engines were originally delivered with the rubber water jacket seals installed dry against the cylinder head. The head was painted with a yellow substance. That was the original main failure point. The updated service procedure was to use an RTV at the joint. The RTV prevented the initial intrusion of coolant under the gasket that caused corrosion of the head.
I have never had any issue with the black RTV supplied with the head sets. Obviously chemical sealants can degrade with age in storage. Lots of counterfeit parts are being distributed some being very well disguised. If you really want the highest quality RTV silcone sealants, I would suggest Three Bond and Drei Bond products which are probably the same company. Toyota FIPG (form in place gasket) and Honda Bond are both truly excellent RTV sealers.
The main reason that I replied to the original poster was his mentioning oil on the o-rings. O-rings function best when lubricated but oil can adversely affect many types of rubber. Silicone grease is a safer lube for o-rings. |

the "black sealant" in the VR kits is Reinzosil.
Reinzosil is the german engineered "mother of all RTV".
it is awesome stuff!
use it on all WBX sealing surfaces in the proper way _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Wondering if anyone could recommend what to use for each of my questions 1 thru 4? For example.....
1. Use (enter type of sealant name/brand)) for on the bottom of the cylinders and on the round black gasket and use this much applied to the ??.....
2. Use (enter type of sealant name/brand) on the little green round gasket at the top of the cylinder.
3. You can use the black rtv sealant that came with the black rubber head gaskets but (enter type of sealant name/brand) will work better.
4. (enter type of sealant name/brand) is better to use on the head acorn bolts in place of the little yellow sealant that came with the gasket kit.
Thank for your help.
Cheers,

Seems like there are a lot of Hylomar products on their website to choose from.
Does anyone have a link for the Hylomar sealant that they use? And the Right Stuff has a few options also so if you could link that also would be helpful.
Thanks

When installing the heads I was taught to apply the black sealant on both sides of the rubber. Wait 20 mins then install. Torque 1/2 way and wait another 6 hours or so(usually overnight). Then complete the sequence. Idea being prevents "squish" out of the sealant.
Used the yellow goo but this was 25 years ago.... _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE
