Hi - I need to identify this highroof. I need to remove it to replace the old seal underneath. Ideally I’d like to find someone who has removed/replaced one. I need to know how the floor and bulkheads in it are attached to the roof without tearing the shit out of it. It has the aluminum channel with screws in it on the surround. The rubber? insert that covers the screws is long gone.

This 74 was delivered new in Eugene. Not sure of the top manufacturer.

It's a Westfalia high top.

Is there absolutely zero identifying mark, ID plate, or anything on it?

There's enough brainpower and experience around here, someone will probably recognize the maker.

More info: It has the sliding sunroof still installed. When I got it it had a Westie interior with the fold up bed, no stove, sink, fridge. Who knows if it’s original.
I have seen tops with a similar profile but they usually have window/s. The plywood floors in the fore and aft areas are fastened to ribs/joists on 16”? centers front to back with brass woodscrews. The ribs sit on the roof, separated by what looks like strips of paper. I just can’t tell how they’re attached to the roof or if they’re attached to the top at the ends.

Just google westfalia high top images and you will see them. His was probably a work van that's why there are no windows.

It's not quite the same, and a Westy would be a pop top. What you would be seeing out there in the image search is most likely the Adventurewagon, which isn't the same conversion as Westfalia. There's a few clones and other aftermarket high tops, and the PO's would be one - nothing wrong with it, very unique and interesting history I bet.

This is an example of early Bay Adventurewagon:

A slightly later version would be our friends from Kombi Life, Ben and Leah's 1973, Boomerang:

Exactly, it's the same Google that says any camperized VW regardless of make is a "Westfalia". Westfalia never made a high top for their VW conversions, VW themselves offered a cargo van with a high roof built in their factory, but it looked dramatically different than that one and had nothing to do with Westfalia.

Since the bus is 2 tone with no jalousie windows it's likely a deluxe that had the top and camper equipment added later, it may even have been done by a PO using parts sourced from the junkyard. The top doesn't look familiar, but there were many versions made by many companies, everyone was getting into camper conversions around that time. It may have even come from a fiberglass shop that supplied other makers as a bare shell with no windows that the PO installed himself.

Here's a selection of OTW campers to look through, you might spot something similar: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=288111 Sadly it's another great thread that's partially spoiled by not using the Samba gallery to post the pics in.

The vinyl strip that goes in the channel should be pretty generic RV stuff.

Go to Amazon, or your local RV dealer. Search "RV vinyl insert screw channel cover trim"
I saw 3/4" wide and 1" wide. A 50 ft roll is like $20 or less.

Your channel should have ribs on the side that hold the trim.

Good luck!

this is the only other one of that particular hightop I have seen, spotted in Cle Elum, Wa. in 2017. sadly, I didn’t take interior shots but this bus was heavily modified anyway.

Chachi - That’s the only one I’ve seen with that figure molded into the side like that. Looks like it adds stiffness to the side like a bend in metal.I’ll see if I can upload a couple more images. Thanks for the replies.

Well... at least THAT one was a Westphalia (probably).

With a weird and cool hightop someone added.

Google search does come up with a few high tops that have that side profile body line. Heres one.

Heres a youtube video that looks like it. They call it an Adventurewagen.

Notice the windows are different on these two.

Good luck!

These represent the good part of this story.

The right rear window has no wing component like a camper. That, plus the fact that the installation looks consistent with pretty good construction standards of the day, inclines me think that this was some sort of factory show. Everything looks relatively unfuckedwith.

Where was it delivered from Germany. Maybe a clue on regional conversion companies in the area. Just a thought.

Wow!! Eugene, Oregon has its own Export code? What is it? I couldn’t find it here. I thought in your first post you meant it was sold from a dealership in Eugene. My bad.
