I have been tracking down excess oil pressure problems for too long. Today I started to inspect the valves. My car is a Formula so engine is tucked tight also oil pan in the way of rear access. I have the proper tool but its too long. I dont wish to pull the engine. Is there a different one or has someone here fabbed a shorter one, about 2 1/2"? I guess I could buy another one and cut it up.

That is like saying you have a leak in your roof but don't want to go up there.

REmove the pan and have at it. Geezehus man. Very Happy

use a tap that fits snuggly into the bottom of the piston.
Taps are rather short and the threads can grip the hollowed out bottom of the piston.
Unless someone has a better idea. You'll need to remove the sump to get good access to the piston.

Heat that area of the case with a torch and wiggle it around with a magnet until it falls out.

Or if you actually need to fix it in a hurry just start up the engine and rev it and it will probably remove itself.

or both

When I make new oil plungers I do thread the bottom for easy removal.
Partly worried that making them a tighter fit could result in them sticking more often, but that has not been a problem at all. It seems the problem is dirt, and dirt comes in all sizes. And the groove in a grooved plunger just adds another place for dirt to be.
IMO it's not going to help anything by expanding the bottom of the piston with your tool and ripping it out. Use heat and/or hydraulic pressure then no additional damage will be done. Put cardboard under it and watch the pill pressure guage/light.

There is also a vent hole in the lower end of that bore. Make sure it is there and open. Without that it won't work. And I guess you already drained the oil because it sure is clean. I don't understand why it isn't dripping.

Modok thanks, the plunger is in pretty tight I think that is part if not all of my problem. I will try the quick start method after more heat and magnets.

It has been stiing since Nov and the plunger is tight enough to seal off any residual oil. Nothing came out when I removed plug.

I was thinking the vent hole below the plunger should be dripping, but maybe it only does that if the oil is filled up to the top mark.

you can see it here highlighted in orange, it's higher up than I pictured at first

OK I think I've got it now.
Most people would jack up the REAR, of a rear engined vw car, thus the oil would be higher towards the flywheel, so it comes out that hole.

In your case I have no idea Wink

Set the engine on fire is your idea Modok?

If you have taken the pan off, you would have been done by now.

You can't take the pan off without pulling the engine. Formula car welded on belly pan. Notice the sump is about 1/4 inch above belly pan. Below hedder...

Quick starter crank with a big oil pan underneath and the piston should shoot out.

1/4" NPT tap fits real nice in a plunger.
Just get it started and it will grab it and rotate it. You can then pull it out..

I drilled a hole in my stuck one and pulled it out with a slide hammer. Then I just got a new one...
