Found it on drivers side floor mat. Where did it come from?? 9 mm long and 5 mm dia. It is pretty strong and hard to push by hand. Had only gauges removed a while back.

That looks like the type of spring from the tip of the gas tank lid release pull. Is your gas tank knob in place?
Here is a thread about rebuilding/repairing the gas tank flap. Scroll down and take a look at the cable end that screws into the knob and see what you think.

Is that a screw or tube going through the center of that spring?
Need a better picture.

I have a 67 with no gas door. No idea where it came from. Not much under the dash. Looks just like dirt inside the spring. |

That was my thought as well. I wonder if it could be part of the turn signal switch, or maybe the column lock. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Is that a brass rivet in the middle of spring?
Ask cause it looks like a wire was crimped into it and the rivet is a contact.
For what? I Dunno. But you were gluing your Ignition in another post... ?? _________________ 68 BUS

Yep....looks like a tube in the middle to me.
Yes.....too small for what ai was thinking and he has no gas flap system.
Still maybe a little large in diameter for one of the springs inside of a dash switch.
Hmmmmm.

Just pulled it out of the spring. It is a brown, like a plastic tube with a slot in it. It is too small for a picture.
I have not worked on that ignition switch or the turn signal yet. Untouched. No work was done on the steering column for several years. However, I did install some wiring and relay for my new electric fuel pump last week. Had the factory fuse box lowered and the left gauge removed, but nothing else was touched. |

I noticed a post of yours a couple days ago on gluing an ignition plate. I would venture to guess that the spring might be out of your ignition. Is it returning normally? There is a detent ball in there as well. It's been a while sense I've had an ignition apart.
If you have more info on what you've had appart or pics of the column we might be able to pinpoint where the part came from. _________________ "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. removed steering lock today. The spring I found is not related to it.
One thing I noticed after the lock was removed and inspected. It appears the Bakelite contact piece shrinks over time ( decades ) and that is why it come out. The piece was 100% good and also no damage on the crimps . Just getting it back together is a .........
Makes you wonder how it was done at the factory |

The electrical part and the lock cylinder can be removed from the actual ignition housing. Small pins need to be drilled out to separate the 3 main parts, electrical sw, lock cyl and cylindrical main housing.
Re-crimping the bakelite in electrical SW part is much easier once removed. _________________ 68 BUS

Just looked at both units I have = same problem on both. I will re-crimp both units , but will not remove the electrical portion. The pin is just too tiny. Flat head screw driver and a tiny tiny tiny hammer should work. I did use some JB-weld already to give additional support to keep it in place. |
