Samba member MTNBUS hooked me up with a case, you the man MTNBUS!!!!
Looks like it’s been bored .040” over and has 10mm studs. Looks like the studs aren’t sleeved, so they can be removed for case savers and 8 mm studs. I’m gonna clean it up and take it to the shop to be measured. If it’s good, it’ll be line bored to .060” opened fo 94s, get case savers and 8mm studs.
Thanks MTNBUS!!! You the man, man!!!!!!!

Awesome!
That'll get you on the road faster than waiting 7 weeks for Mahle to get their oversize cam bearings back in stock. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Careful with boring the case for 94's and still using the big case savers- cutting the case so big (97.25 mm dia.) will often skim material right off the side of the savers which reduces the studs' grip. The effect is shown here (Agentwright gallery)-
Recommend keeping the bore for a 90.5 mm size or for thick-wall 92's (96 mm) that have the base already reduced for a 90.5 / 92 mm slip-in. And have your machinist also skim the case surfaces flat measured out from the crank centerline so that whatever cylinders you end up using sit on a large, flat ledge. |

Thanks Rome, you’re always looking out for me
My builder is a very competent machinist and has over 40 years experience building Volkswagen engines. The only thing I’m worried about is he’s about to retire and then what am I gonna do? _________________ __________

I pulled the studs and scraped the case. Then I took it to the car wash. I sprayed it with degreaser, scrubbed it with a wire brush and pressure washed it. It’s looking a lot better now.

Unfortunately it looks like +.5mm bearings are NLA. I’ve searched and searched the inter-web for them. If anybody has a lead on a set, you help would be greatly appreciated. Thx! |

I went to the shop today to drop off some money and hang out for a bit. We caught up on life and just bullshitted for an hour or so.
He Line Bored my case already. It was .040” over and now he’s got it at .060” over. Late last week I decided to go ahead and increase the displacement to 2175cc. So, we have a CB 78.4mm crank with Chevy rod journals and CB 5.5 H-Beam rods with Chevy journals on order. We also have Total Seal rings and all new bearings on order as well.
We have had extensive conversations about static compression vs. dynamic compression. He going to be shooting for 9.25 - 9.37:1 static compression with this engine. With the 297A (VZ25) cam, the 5.5 rods that static CR we should be looking at ~8:1 dynamic CR.
We compared this built to the specs of the CB 2175cc Builders Choice build kit. They are very close, the CB has CNC ported 044 heads and I have non-CNC ported 044 heads. The 297A cam I using is hotter (steeper, more lift and duration) then the CB2246 cam in the build kit. CB is claiming 160 HP at the crank with their kit, so I would imagine my engine will be close to that. _________________ __________

CB parts came in, straight VW porn.
We now have a problem with the replacement case I got. I guess something went awry with the line bore. It’s not correct, the builder is pissed and the case is no longer useable. Oh well, shit happens. 🤷♂️
He took a walk out to the back 40 and pulled a short block out of the interior of a bus. It’s a AS41 case that has never been split, so we are now onto a third case. It’ll be broke down, measured and machined accordingly.
CB 78.4mm Super Race crank with Chevy Rod journals
CB 5.5 Super Race Rods with Chevy rod journals, so sexy!
Think I’m gonna order a set of 5.5 wide rims and put larger tires on the rear. I’m thinking maybe 205/75r15. _________________ __________

Let’s update, now that the ball is rolling. Another case was acquired, after several days of looking my builder found one stashed. It’s a AS41 with factory 8mm case savers. The case sat for many years, maybe even decades. The bugs got into all the oil galleys and they were packed with all sorts of shit. A couple of plugs were pulled to clean it all out. Just so happens he pulled the 2 plugs he uses for his custom Full Flow system. So I think it’s gonna be flowed with an external oil filter. We are still working out the details of that set up, although so far I think we seem to have a decent plan. The case is bored .040” over, machined for 94s and clearanced for the 78.4mm crank. I believe the compression will be set to 9.25:1 because that it the highest he can make it without fly cutting the heads. I’m sure that will be plenty.
We still have a few items to order, as I keep on changing shit and adding more shit to the build.
I ordered 5.5” wide rims from Jbugs, I’ve received those. I also ordered 205/75R15 tires from Amazon, but they messed up my order and I’m gonna have to reorder those tomorrow. 🤷♂️
Mocked up to check the rod clearance
Here you can see some of the clearencing that was done. I’m using Chevy rod journals.
Jbugs 5.5” wide rims. They seem to be pretty nice.

Nice to see the engine in mock-up mode. They indeed take time to get parts figured out and ordered. Then there's the 100 little things you forgot to order.
205/75/r15? Are you sure? That's a really tall tire, 27.13"
Compared to 205/70/r15 at 26.3" I run 205/70 on my blue car and I can say it is a rather tall tire.
Anyway, thank you for the update. I look forward to the next one. _________________ I have learned over the years.

The 165/89r15 are 25.39”, so just 1.74” larger. I think that will be nice looking, definitely fill out the fender better since I raised the rear torsion to 20°. My builder wanted me to go wit 215/75r15. I agreed with him that I should go bigger and ended with the 205s after a bunch of research, seems like that’s a popular size among beetle owners here in this forum. _________________ __________

Point of clarity here.
I wasn't pooping on your tire selection. Just pointing out that the side walls are tall.
I have the 205/70/r15 on the rear of my blue car. The tire completely fills the rear fender radius.
I run 185 fronts. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Tires finally showed up and I had them mounted to the 5.5” wide rims I purchased from Jbugs. I think they look good on the car. Custom Oil filter mount has been welded to the fender well and the well has been modified for the lines to run through it. I also cleaned the engine case with Eagle One Mag Cleaner and coated it with Gibbs. I believe all the parts for the engine build are in, so once the crank and flywheel come back from being balanced the build should start.
