This seems like it would be a cool thing to have if you really wanted some AC in your bus for those real long trips or something. If it actually works.

It's just a fan that sets on top of your ice chest.
That's giving me some ideas... I've got a bunch of 12v case fans just collecting dust... |

Yeah I started thinking the same thing. I have a bunch of case fans that would work just as well probably. I'll make the thing for like 15 bucks! _________________ Stephen

It might work but.... Unlike a normal AC unit that removes the humidity from the air making things more comfortable this method will actually add moisture into the air. Sure it may be cooler but that "sticky" feeling in the air will go up making it *feel* warmer. Cool idea though. _________________ Jasan C.

What about their suggestion of using 2 litre bottles that are frozen to eliminate humidity. I know there will still be condensation on the outside of the bottle but it has to a lot less then pushing the air over just ice. Do you think that will work? _________________ Stephen

I don't know why this would work other than in a vERY tight space- smaller than the van. I would thing that unless you were right beside the thing that you wouldn't feel it at all. |

The site says it cools a 7X7X5 foot space very well. So if it actually does do that I would imagine it would cool a bus down. I don't know about the humidity though. _________________ Stephen

My paintball team has a 5 gal cooler we fill with water, and it pumps water to misters infront of a sealed motor (SUPER IMPORTANT PART!!) fan, using 110v in this case. It keeps a whole group of people cool, lowers temps about 20deg F.
The bad? It's water folks, gets stuff misty and wet, and caused condensate buildup in closed areas. We use ours outside.... |

Imagine how fast that would melt the ice in your cooler! 1, maybe 2 hours tops!
I'd rather be hot, and have access to a cold drink, than cool for an hour, and then hot and have warm drinks. _________________ Eric Allred

Dry ice = no humidity, but also = a lack of oxygen in a tight space? Mammals cannot live on CO2. _________________ Larry in OB

open one or two of the vents and lack of oxygen problem is solved. i suppose it would cut down on some of the cooling power, but not too significantly.

Heres a trick I learned while liveing in Japan. It gets SUPER hot and humid in the summer. RAIN FOREST HUMID! No kidding...
Combine a one gallon bucket/container of ice water with about 1/2 container of rubbing alcohol. (It's probably 8 oz) Dip a small towel in the water mixture, roll it up and then place across the back of neck at the base of the head. I was shown this method of staying cooling during 105*/ 90% humidity heat. in southern Japan. I got so chilled I was shakeing!
If I was driveing across the desert here in USA I would bring this to stay sane. |

I remember seeing some 'hang on the passenger window' type evaporative coolers on bugs - just fill 'em with ice water and the faster you drive the better you'll feel. I suppose one could build/buy the same sort of thing for a bus. _________________ Not so jealous anymore.

Yep, swamp coolers. Thermador was one brand. They were a popular accesory back then. I see them come up in the classifieds here every once in a while. Here is a shot of a Thermador on a bug.

I'm working on a project to put a 110 AC powered window unit that is 7000 BTU's into the back doors window of my bus. It's only 12" in height so it will fit in there. A power converter that turns 12 volts into 115 AC current runs about $200 though. The trick here is to fabricate a panel to accept the unit and still have two small custom built windows on each side of the unit (so you can see out). The obsticle i'm running into is getting someone to weld me an aluminum bracket that mounts to the fabricated panel and the back door. This way you can make the installation as permanent as possible with a fully functional back door. My wife says I've been watching too much MTV Pimp My Ride!!! _________________ jrodcat |

pimp my ride, or Red Green.
The efficiency losses of the electric motor and DC to AC inverter just don't make any sense. |
