New to Vanagons and just picked up an 89. There are red and blues switches to the left of the steering wheel. Also a push button between them. I cannot find their description in the owner's manual but they look like original items (not add ons). Any one have an idea what they are and what they do? Thanks.

Hi. None of these three are original. They have been added by a previous owner, or by a specialist if your van is a former specialized service vehicule (ambulance, etc).
Same for the red switch above the 72 fuse, not original.
Follow the wires!
(My first answer was something about choosing the water temperature of the windshield washer fluid. Who knows). _________________ '90 Little Blue Truck, 2WD auto, FAS GenV 2.0 NA (AVH) |

Definitely added by a previous owner. The middle one looks like maybe a horn button. _________________ 1977 Westfalia 2.0FI 4spd

| Not stock. They are add-ons. Obviously patriotic. Easier you tell us what they do. |

What happens when you activate the switches?

The Red one is for hyper drive and the Blue one is for 4 Wheel drive. I would have thought that the person you bought it from would have explained what all the features were.
Switch em on and off and see what happens.
