Congratulations Steve. Looking good. What wideband meter do you use for dialing that in? I need to suck it up and get my own.
Enjoy.

This is the AFR meter I'm putting in. It's not in yet, nor have I dialed in the engine yet. Just static settings.

It only operates in hover mode at present. Hope to have suspension back in this week. Brakes too.

How did you kill the original?

Best to set your timing at 28° BTDC @3800+ rpms, hoses off and plugged. If you have a retard can, do not reinstall the hose to it, if the can does not hold vacuum, but leave the hose plugged off.

It lost compression in one cylinder. Intake seat came -er- unseated.

But it still wouldn't run on 3 cylinders except above high idle. It would start cold then die at idle and refuse to start.

I've got the new engine in tune for dwell and timing and it runs well above idle.

At idle it eventually stalls. Bwahahahaha.

Several people (I'm lookin' at you xevin) suggested using a wide band AFR meter. To my joy this is a brilliant bit of kit. After 2 days installing, it indicates once warm the AFR goes to 21. Way too lean. Turning the mixture screw has no effect, peg to peg.

At 1500 or above AFR hovers around 14-16.

I think this is what left us stranded in FL. Well that and the overall state of the engine.

I'm going to do some reading and thinking. I predict either a new AFM or controller. Or both. Any suggestions?

Check your AAR, it could be stuck open. Fuel injection corp in northern CA can rebuild the AFM, fuel pump, fuel psi regulator, AAR, and injectors. And they can test the CSV.

Did Brothers do an initial break-in for 20 minutes before they shipped the crate to you? I gotta think they did.

air cooled vanagons are tuned to the lean from the beginning..
so doesn't take much to get them hurting..

do a search and on here there's a 'hack' for lack of a better term that allows you to dial in the AFR via the T-II sensor with a potentiometer at the dash.

here's a thread.. has helped some..
