For years I have used plastic screw on gear oil pumps to fill my bus transmission, excepting when I worked where I had a lift and hand lever gear oil pump. The ones in my stash have the wrong thread for the bottles, so I need another. I was thinking of this one. Anyone use it to fill their bus transmission, if not what do you use? I saw a Quick fill one that is also sold by MATCO but it is $130 and a week wait. Looking for something I can get today or tomorrow kind of thing, it can go years in between uses. This one is like $8 at Harbor Freight. Yes I know about pre-heating oil so it flows easier but I would rather not stink up the house so whatever I use needs to be robust.

In doubt of chemical resistance for oil or fuel. |

at $8 it only needs to work one time. The plastic screw on ones are too slow. Anything too expensive is going to sit around and take up space. The website appears to have people who have used the one I showed for gear oil, but sometimes those posts can be seeded by people who want their product sold.
This style is commonly sold but it only pumps 1 fl oz per push and there are 32 fl oz in a quart. It takes a really long time to fill a transmission with this style. https://www.harborfreight.com/gear-oil-and-fluid-p...QMQAvD_BwE _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Thanks Phil, I will look for the empty bags but I already have 4 quarts of Joe Gibbs Driven GL4 80-90W. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

I used that HF oil pump to evacuate the oil from my Honda Pressure washer.
It worked a treat and still works months later.
It's a good deal for the selling price.
I haven't used it for gear lube yet. But I imagine it will work better than the bottle top pump that costs more and is only a one way pump, unlike the HF pump.

Yeah, I looked for empty bags but gave up after about 30 seconds... a more patient search may find them.
If you do find them, please post a source. This would be great for topping up gear oil, or even engine oil on my early Bay Bus with the air cleaner in the way. _________________ Current Fleet:

Thru a Google search that pulled up a Corvette forum with the same question, I found the unit MATCO sells but thru another source for less. It is next day delivery and supposedly works well with gear oil. I liked the reviews on the $8 one but my experience with gear oil is always a pain - if there isn't a cap, then one is trying to keep control of two hoses, and pump at the same time, which it is easy to tip over the bottle. The ones that screw on are a pain because they are 1fl oz per each pump and a quart is like 32 fl oz, and an 091 takes almost 4 quarts. That is like 160 pumps to fill the transmission.
So I went with this one. I really thought someone out there with a bus would have figured out a clever solution. This is probably the best because my battery powered drill or impact will drive it while I hold the bottle and hose with the other hand. I'll try to rig a wire, bent copper pipe or something to hold the hose in the 091.

MATCO version video. The ending is sort of huh? Use it to fill a liter container when he could have just picked up the container and poured it.

It's polypropylene. It works just fine with gear and motor oils. I would not use it for fuels because of the hose materials (which I think are a urethane blend) but I have used this exact pump for hypoid oil, hydraulic oil and glycol ether coolant in several factories.

The problem with the bags is, when you hold them, or squeeze them slightly, oil squirts out, unlike rigid bottles |

I have used this pump as a vacuum to pick up the crumbs of dirt that accumulates in the bottom of my hot tub. I also use it as a siphon to extract water out of an out door water fountain. I just give a couple of pumps and the little pump does all the work. It’s not super fast but it works great for my needs. I wonder how it would work for transmission fluid thanks for the idea Steve

If you wouldn't eat crackers and cheese while sipping wine in the hot tub, you would not have crumbs to vacuum up. Or you could just add an automatic pool sweep and not have to mess with it, although the pool sweep might tickle your feet if it came on while you were using the tub ........ _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Amazon screwed up the delivery (common here a lot lately) so I cancelled it. One site suggested using a regular sprayer bottle with out the sprayer. Might work.

I just put a piece of vinyl hose on the spout of the gear oil bottle.
Jam a 6"-8" piece on tight, and tape it so it doesn't come loose.
Place end of hose in fill hole, then lift up bottle till it's flowing.
Clear tubing allows you to see what's going on.
I haven't heated the oil , but that would make bottle easier to squeeze .
Easy to clean, or just toss it. _________________ 73 bus. Org. 1700 with dual Weber 40 idfs, bus header with Empi qp muffler, CB magnaspark 2 " ready to run kit". |

Thank you. I will take another look at that method, but the fill hole may be too high for that and the floor interferes tryin to get the bottle high enough. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

I have a more generic version of this pump. I used them for years doing fleet megafinance work, they have many uses. One of my favorite uses is as a siphon |
