My sisters house burnt yesterday. They ditched the BMW. Took the 83 Westy to safety. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

A bestie’s childhood home since the ‘60s is likely gone.
He’d just sold it after his mom died last spring, but he relays the loss for him feels much the same. _________________ 1984 Westfailure/2.1 Digijet/5.43 Ring & Pinion/Peloquin/D-rated BFG KO2s

So sorry to hear this, I figured stories of loss from Samba members would start being posted. Every ghostly picture of someone's burned out home and belongings that is shown over the years is so haunting. Glad they got out safely.
My father was always worried about Fire ripping through his home in Helotes Texas due to it being backed up against a large amount of dry shrub and skinny tree land/property. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

We are out in Needles and had a steady wind of 35 mph for two days with gust up to at least 60. We had a few fires that the powers that be were able to keep from spreading, I think there was just one trailer house lost. Our concern right at our place was a neighbor to the NW who set off a burn pile on the evening of the 6th just before the wind picked up, maybe just to keep the stuff in his pile from blowing around in his yard. I doubt that he was all that careful about putting the fire out and I was certainly afraid that after the winds started it might rekindle and catch the grass and leaves on fire endangering the entire neighborhood. I didn't call the fire department on him but should have as his fire was illegal, but will definitely call if he ever does it again. I hate being a bad neighbor, but his actions were just too risky.

I understand his doing it, but you cannot trust it to luck that it will be okay. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

So sorry to hear; glad they made it out. These fires are devastating. Pacific Palisades and Hollywood Hills get all the media attention because multi-millionaires/celebs live there now, but the Eaton Fire has wiped out the entire middle-class town I grew up in and has killed 5. My elementary school... gone. Classmates'/friends' childhood homes... gone. Mom's coworker/friend's house near JPL... gone. Historic locations and businesses... gone. Based on a burn map, my childhood neighborhood was spared, but no confirmation on that yet; if it has been, it would be sheer luck. Houses across the canyon, the nature center down in the canyon (along with its reptiles), and horse stables*, however... gone, and for the second time in 30 years, both times due to human carelessness (latest fire, Dad heard, was started at/near the local trailhead).
Talking to my dad about evacuations, I told him, "As much as it would hurt to leave my Cabriolet behind, I'd take the Westy because it's a home-on-wheels."
*Horses were evacuated, except one that ran off... later found alive with minor injury. _________________ ~Kamz

BTDT . . . YOU are not the bad neighbor in this scenario.
When the neighbor only thinks of themselves, you are 100% allowed to look out for yourself.

For those with an interest in weather, when the low temperature in Ely, Nevada (elevation ~ 7000') drops into the teens and lower, the cold air will begin to slip downhill speeding up and warming as it goes and when conditions are right the winds will go around or in places over the Sierras and come down the western side as the Santa Ana winds. The process of course is not restricted to Ely, but that is just a place to check the weather forecast for.
The process doesn't require there to be wind in Ely area to start with, but this time there was wind in the area, pushing the cold air out, thus magnifying the flow. |

I don’t have social media besides the Samba. My bros said they saw it and it was fake. This looked faked to me too. Can anyone confirm the authenticity?
