Probably a rookie question...adjusting free play on the clutch pedal. Bently says to tighten the cable nut until it has 1/16" clearance from the lever arm, and pedal travel should be 3/8 to 3/4"
Ok, so when I do that, there is no "resistance" at the pedal other than the spring tension on the cable lever...none at all to the end of the pedal travel.
So, I tightened the nut down about 3/4 of the way down the cable threads. Now, there is very solid resistance (takes solid effort pushing the pedal by hand) and the pedal travel is reduced. Ok, a bit much so backed it off.
With the nut backed off to about half way now, I get the pedal travel back. But there is no "free play", tension is felt from zero, it just increases the further the pedal goes.
If I back off more until I have 3/4" of free play, its not a positive "free play, now tension starts at 3/4" travel" but more just a steep increase in pressure from 3/4" through the travel. There is no positive free play now tension moment in the travel Is this right? Kinda hard then to say where free play ends and tension begins, in order to set it at 3/8 - 3/4. Feel seems so subjective.
It seem one needs the right "feel", my past experience is limited to hydraulic clutches...I note that at this last setting, the cable level is not upright 90 degrees but under tension and pulled back just a little. |
