1964 13-Window Deluxe
Purchased in 2005.  Drove it home and it sat in my garage for a few years while I collected parts and very slowly worked/had work performed on it. Finished it up in late 2008 and sold in January, 2009 to help fund another Bus purchase.

1957 Camper Panelvan
Purchased in September, 2006 from Flagstaff, AZ.  Purchased to resell.  One owner car being sold by friend of original owner's estate.  Used for a time in the 1970s to deliver flowers from farm north of Los Angeles, CA to LA area shops and local markets.

1966 Double Door Panel
Purchased in March, 2006 from a local repair shop that closed.  Bought so it didn't get crushed and to grab some parts for my '63 Standard and then resell or cut up.  Wrecked and had at least been rolled on it's left side, maybe worse.

1967 Beetle
Purchased in early 2006 from a local Phoenix original owner when I saw it for sale in his driveway while buying some VW parts from his neighbor.  Bought just to clean and resell.  Nice!

1965 Type 3 Ghia 1500S
Purchased from 2nd owner in El Paso, TX.  Flew there, tuned up and drove it home with a blown exhaust and brake trouble.  Spent about 12 hours cleaning the dust out of it, then installed an NOS exhaust, redid the brakes with an NOS master cylinder, rebuilt the carbs.  Decided to sell to fund the purchase of a nice T34.

1962 walk-thru 15-window Deluxe
Received as partial payment for 1960 Double Cab.  Running/driving vehicle with minor rust.  Fresh 1600DP engine, missing some parts.  Interior MIA except for front seats.

1958 Standard
Very complete 1958 Standard with 77K original miles. Original paint, original engine, original transmission. Some rust in the left rocker and the front lower nose areas. Purchased to build into daily driver but decided to sell due to purchase of another low-mileage VW.
1960 Double Cab
Sweet Double Cab with 66K original miles.  Purchased, drove as daily driver for a while.  Entered into 3-way trade agreement for another vehicle but it didn't work out to my satisfaction.  Decided to sell for cash offer from trade participant.
1987 16v GTI
Purchased with part of the proceeds from the Notchback. Cosmetically ok, mechanically excellent, primary daily driver for over a year. Accessorized with 15" rims/tires and TT exhaust.
1963 Notchback
Purchased from California original owner.  Drove home to Phoenix, daily drove for almost a year, decided to sell it due to my 50 mile per day commute and to finance my 1955 Kombi restoration.
1954 Single Cab
Purchased from California 3rd owner.  Drove home to Phoenix, daily drove for one week, then disassembled to put back to stock.  New jobs and giving my 1955 Kombi priority prevented me from working on it very often.

Decided to sell it after 1 year of ownership.

1965 Squareback 1500 S
Purchased from local 3rd owner.  Barely driven home, then brought back to life.  Original 1500 S model, upgraded to a '66 1600cc drive train.  Accessorized with early Hella fog lights, an original roof rack, a parcel tray and finger guards.

Dutiful daily driver for 1 year.

Sold to finance VW Truck purchase.

1965 Variant
Bought cheap from friend of my brother to save it from the wrecking yard. It had been parked for 5-6 years.

Sold it to someone who said they would get it going again.

1960 Single Cab
Bought as restoration project from man who had a camper shell mounted in the bed and was living in it. It had a good 1600cc engine and transmission and had never been hit.

Replaced rear brakes, shift coupler to make it driveable. The guy had been driving it with the right rear brake line plugged by a nail and the shift coupler held together with a metal hanger twisted into a loop.

Didn't realize the level of rust on the pan made it a serious restoration project, which I had no motivation to undertake, so I sold it.

1963 Single Cab
Bought it in Hayward. Apparently a drug user had been living in it and sold it to the guy I bought it from for drug money. Had double cargo area doors, very nice gates, and almost no rust.

Took it home, stripped and sprayed the interior out with a high pressure water hose. I then stripped the upholstery on the 1/3, 2/3 seats as they were infested with used sunflower seeds and cigarette butts. Pulled the motor and cleaned and painted it. Reassembled the 1300cc engine with a new 12v alternator setup. Purchased set of original rims at Sacramento show and had them powder-coated and shod with new tires. Successfully used the bed to haul 3800 lbs. of concrete to the local dump, proving that the recommended load of 1700 lbs. could be exceeded. Unfortunately, the top motor mount bolts were loose, so the 6-volt clutch broke 1 week later (see picture). Made door panels from Masonite and sprayed them gray. Had minor engine fire on the way back from a Vallejo, CA show - had to replace fuel lines and spark plug wires.

Expecting to change jobs, I sold it for a commute vehicle.

Pending
1992 Jetta
Bought it in Marin county from the original owner. it had been maintained and garaged by them and was in excellent shape. Used by Jennepher as a daily driver for many years.

Traded it for a non-VW when the automatic transmission began failing the shift below 4000 rpms when cold (among other reasons)

1986 GTI
Bought cheap as commute driver. Had a damaged fender and front grill, which I replaced in my front yard.

Installed a CD player, which got stolen. Installed a power ragtop from a Renault Fuego. Nothing like using a sawz-all to cut a hole in your roof! I cut the springs to lower it (not recommended!) and dyed the seats black with fabric dye, which turned out to be a really bad idea cause they leaked when the humidity was high and I had to cover the seats in plastic.

I had the timing belt replaced when it broke. A week after I got the car back, the front motor mount broke, breaking the starter casing, bursting the stock oil cooler, and severing some hoses.

Bought a house, so I sold it to buy a truck to work on the house.

1963 MBZ 220S
Not a VW but a cool car nonetheless

43K original miles, bought from 2nd owner.
Traded for next car - 1986 GTI

1963 Variant
Bought it after selling summer job truck. Pretty nice Variant 'N' model. Original interior, lowered, rebuilt 1600c engine, converted to 12-volt.

I installed an EMPI wheel and a full-length roof rack.

It needed some work, which I didn't have time to do once I started working after college, so I sold it to get a more dependable commute vehicle.

1963 Notchback
Bought it while I was selling my 1986 Scirocco but soon found out it was a poor example of a Notchback.

The engine compartment was cut out for a Type 1 engine and a new front clip had to be welded on. I installed a 2020cc upright engine for daily driving, built by a local VW shop.

Traded it for a truck I needed for my summer college job.

1986 Scirocco
Bought it with the proceeds of the 1983 GTI. Pretty nice Scirocco, has a Kamei front spoiler, driving lights, and a 10-CD changer stereo system.

I added a Turbo setup off a wrecked Scirocco. It was fairly fast at that point but the top speed still was limited to 105mph due to a weak suspension.

Sold it to get a Notchback to someone who "didn't want a sports car." :-)

1983 GTI
Bought with proceeds of 1956 Bug. Had new paint, Cabriolet bumpers and side skirts, and a nice stereo. Had a very loud Monza-tip only exhaust.

Replaced the transmission and the axles when the 3rd gear synchros failed.

Sold it to buy anther Scirocco (I liked Sciroccos, obviously)

1956 Bug
Traded my 1967 Squareback for it after my 1981 Scirocco was wrecked.

I became the second registered owner. It was a pretty nice Bug, original condition with one repaint, 12-volt transmission and 1600 single-port engine, and a parcel tray.

The guy who traded me for it decided the next day the trade was not fair to him (no kidding!) and he proceeded to threaten the call the police on me. I convinced him he had no grounds since I had a bill of sale with his signature.

Sold it for a better daily driver because of electrical problems. I should have kept it...

1965 Squareback
Bought it from a local guy for parts. Got a few things off it before the city towed it without warning. I let the tow company keep it since the tow charges were outrageous!

1981 Scirocco
Bought to replace 1967 Squareback but, while on-duty at my pizza delivery job, someone ran a stop sign and I T-boned them. Naturally, they sued my insurance company even though the police report said it was 100% their fault. I returned to work after the accident and received a call requesting another pizza - the caller's pizza had been flipped and folded inside the box. I can only assume it was the pizza that was in my car since it was delivered by another driver!

I decided to keep ownership of the car when it "totaled" by the insurance company and immediately sold it for parts to a junkyard. Kept parts like the exhaust tip, which the junkyard guy cut off with a torch right next to the gas tank. (We hid behind a wall at the time.)

1967 Squareback
Traded my 1978 Scirocco for it. Pretty nice mildly custom Squareback. It had shaved door handles, picture windows, one-piece windows, and a rebuilt 1641cc engine with a close-ratio transmission.

Got it painted white by a friend of a friend and I installed gauges from a Porsche 914 along with additional oil temp, oil pressure, and voltmeter gauges from VDO.

Blew the engine while driving to Southern California to college, the rear main seal was leaking really bad. Got the engine rebuilt by a local ex-VW mechanic on break from school and drove it down for my Sophomore year.

Traded it for a 1956 ragtop Bug a little while later.

1978 Scirocco
My first car. Bought it from a local second owner. It had a little surface rust, so I spray painted it black, then I decided to "white it out," since that was the style back then. I accessorized with a spoiler and rear louvers from J. C. Whitney

I abused the car to its extremes, mud bogging in a local dirt lot and ramming shopping carts. The fun ended one rainy night when I was peeling out and shattered the transmission casing, throwing pieces through the hood of the car.

Swapped out the transmission and replaced a few other parts like the electric fan as they were victims of the damage. Ended up trading it for my next VW.
